Question to the people who saw the show in real time, back in 2006-07...

To all you guys who saw the show in real time, episode after episode a decade ago unlike me, did you at the time think that Jim and Pam were going to end up together? I'm re-watching the show now, and i am wondering whether or not it was clear at the time for people the way it is clear when you binge watch it. What did you guys personally think? Was there anyone who genuinely thought they'd never get together?

reply

It was obvious from day one they would get together. To me anyway. What was interesting was how it would happen. But there was never any doubt.

I am so completely RELIEVED each and every time when Jim knocks on the door of Pam’s telling the camera that she and Jim’s “ timing just wasn’t right” etc. and asks her if she is “ free for dinner”. IMO, they behave exactly as two people would under the circumstances. I rarely throw about this sentence , but I REALLY mean it- Jenna and John nail these scenes and all the scenes of their love affair. “Niagara” is beautiful ❤️

One of the areas where the British original is superior is the moment Dawn and Tim (Pam and Jim) finally get together. It's incredibly poignant.

But that was in a different context. It was the Xmas Special finale, and the British Office only had 12 regular episodes and two Xmas Specials; it was easier to keep that tension on target and bring it all to a tight conclusion.

And Alison Moyet's "Only You" playing under it all was about as perfect as it gets.

Yeah that's how shows work, you know it's gonna happen eventually. Ross and Rachel...or you could say they had a real Sam and Diane thing going on.

reply

Except Sam and Diane don't in fact end up together.

reply

Well they do for a while at least, then Diane wanted to do crap movies instead.

As soon as Pam laid her head on Jims shoulder in "diversity day" (season 1 I think)

I knew they would; everyone basically did. The real question--and source of the genuine suspense that the show did succeed in building--was the when and how of it all. And, when it finally happened, it was a huge relief, but then it was a bit bittersweet because a lot of the suspense at the heart of the show was suddenly gone.

From the first second I saw them, I didn't care.

After that, I didn't care about their story whatsoever, but after repeated viewings, I learned to skip them every time, so I can just enjoy the pure Michael Scott-fun.

Nowadays, I really don't care. "Will or will they hook up" has got to be the MOST boring cliché in anything ever. And yet it's injected painfully into everything, from action movies to Office-based TV shows. It's really tired and tiresome, and I can't understand why anyone would find it entertaining after seeing it once or twice in some movies made in 1920s.

There's -nothing- interesting about 'how' some fictional characters hook up and when they might boink.

Would be different, if they would show -all- aspects of that 'relationship', but of course the interesting parts are never shown.. (not that they should in a show like this anyway, so why are the other parts shown? So women's porn is everywhere, men's porn is always hidden, to be blunt)

Oh I have to disagree . I find “ Jim and Pam’s story” to be so sweet . It is done so organically IMO. I cannot wait , each and every time, when that blasted “Karen” leaves the picture!
Her smarminess and competitiveness with Pam disturbs me.
