In the beginning of the movie, when WS is at the bar and he sees a guy go up and talk to EM and have a hard time, he butts in asking her how the meeting went (or something like that), which makes the guy think that he is her boyfriend. He then goes into a spiel about how he could possibly be like the rest of the population, or how he is actually different in that he would like to hear about her.

Long story short, has anyone ever tried this (ending up with the lady)?

They use the same ruse in Confidence, only to a different end. Here, he was doing her a favor by getting rid of a persistent guy that was annoying her. That's the only reason she went along with it. If she was enjoying the guys company, it would have been totally different. Either way, it does work if you have the confidence in yourself to pull it off. That's the real key.

You're missing the point. You don't understand what he did. What he did was do her a favour. An excellent way to meet someone, by being kind or helpful.
