Plot hole

Since I like the movie, and it gets shown on cable TV here in Mexico about once a week (or more!!) Ive seen this movie quite a few times. Even so I hadnt notice anything weird (usually in this kind of movies one shuts the brain off). However I watched the movie yesterday, and notice an important plot hole. It doesnt much matter in a romatic comedy of this sort but I thought it would be nice to post it here at least as a curiosity.

When Geoff (Sara's gay coworker) meets Hitch at the park, revealing that hes the date doctor, he claims to have gotten Hitch's card through Albert Brennaman. This is a mistake, actually. Sara (and much less Geoff) didnt know that Albert knew the date doctor, much less than he was a customer of the date doctor!! Sara was aware that Albert knew Hitch, but she (of course) didnt know Hitch was the date doctor.

From this perspective it would actually have made much more sense if Geoff had said Vance Munson (in fact, they actually got the card from him!!). But, of course, Hitch would have reacted negatively and the whole misunderstanding would have been prevented. Anyways I know the movie is a comedy and this plot hole is mostly irrelevant for its quality (or lack of) but still I decided to post it.

BTW I just noticed the plot hole is listed in the Goofs section. Sorry about that. Still its here for those who dont read the Goofs hehe.

I don't, and i hadn't noticed, thanks! :)

let the world change you, and you can change the world

I didn't actually think that this was a plot hole. I just assumed that he said Albert because they suspected that this was the only way Albert could have ggot a girl like Allegra, thus by saying he got the card off Albert he confirms his suspicious when Hitch acknowledges he has helped him

Great post, I agree that I like the film and its hard to pick at it but what a flaw

Another serious plot hole is the lack of injury done to Will Smith after Mendes sends him flying from the top of her brother-in-laws car near the end, just gets right up lol

So this movie is big in Mexico, wow. How is the dubbing (Im assuming it's dubbed over in Spanish)? Sometimes you see movies in other countries, and the voices coming out of the characters mouth are wwaaay different than the original actor.

Sometimes, it can totally change the tone of the movie.

reply

Actually no. Most movies in cable/satellite aren't dubbed, only those on the open channels who nobody above middle class watches anyway, for that very reason.

I really love it when somebody starts a post with "Wrong.", it really sets a nice tone.

But anyway, Nemesis it is actually you who is wrong; they know that Hitch got Albert the tickets because they discuss this at the fish market cooking place.

In fact, the whole reason that Sara asks Hitch on a second date is because they discover that it was his name on Albert's tickets, and so at the fish market Sara and her boss ask how he knows Albert, and Hitch replies:

"How well do you really know your accountant?"

Which is implying that he has just done a favour for a casual aquaintance.

At this point neither Sara or her boss have any idea that Hitch is the date doctor, hence Sara's surprised reaction when she eventually finds out.

So other than a stab in the dark, they have no real connection between Albert and the date doctor.

Simple.

I don't think it is quite as simple as others are stating...

Sarah is trying to get a story, however she knows that basing her story on her friends experience with Vance won't amount to much more than an urban myth type story, but if she could connect the "Date Doctor" with a high profile celebrity like Allegra Cole it would become a huge media scandal.

This was the reason that Geoff said he was referred by Albert. They made the huge jump to Albert and Allegra to get the huge story.

Hadnt been here for a long while!!!

Well I STILL think it is a plot hole!! Sara found out Hitch knew Albert, but she didnt know Hitch was the date doctor. As for Sara being suspicious of Albert getting someone like Allegra, come on!!!! Sorry I just think it is absurd.

Its true that connecting the date doctor with Allegra wuld make an excellent story, but Sara had absolutely no idea of this connection, I dont think she guessed!!!

Since Geoff mentioning Vance was no choice, the plot hole would have been avoided if Hitch simply hadnt asked. He didnt ask Albert when he met him after all.

I haven't really seen the film in a while, but I guess Hitch is a bit more suspicious at this point in the story, when he was meeting Geoff, than when he was meeting Albert for the first time. And being in a public place like the park seemed to make Hitch look around for anything suspicious. Also he must have noticed on Geoff's appearance that he was nervous. I suppose Geoff could have just taken Albert's name out of thin air after thinking about recent celebrity couplings. Who knows?

reply

It's not a plot hole. Sara begun making the connection long ago, that was the initial point of their second date. Which is why she set up the date with her boss there as well as his comment " is this a date or a source".

reply

uh, no

She set up the date with her boss because they were interested in snooping around Alegra's life...

Ok so here is how this is NOT a plot hole.

Sara is a gossip columnist. The biggest thing people here are failing to realize is that she doesn't need to have exact facts only speculation. It is her job to make connection to find scandal. Hitch is a dating consultant known to the public that has heard of him as "The Date Doctor." It is his job to help make opputunities for great guys like Albert to have a chance of being with someone.

Sara's ivestigation was started by the rumor of the "Date Doctor." Her investigation is fueled and supported by her (friend or relative, can't remember) being cheated on be by Vance who says, as he leaves, "Date Doctor, my ass."

Sara finds Vance, she gets the little card thingie (it's a little black square what would you call it?) with the phone number to reach the Date Doctor. So her associate, Geoff, poses as a client. Using the speculation, Sara's job, (I noted above) Sara has her associate say that he got his information from Albert. Hitch makes a comment about Albert being a nice guy and that is what sealed his impending public humiliation, because he revealed that he was in fact the guy hooking people up like Albert and Allegra.

Sara's speculation is, "Albert, this loser accoutant guy, somehow is seen in public with a woman like Allegra Cole, the hottest thing walking through town. So how did they get to this fashion show? The tickets through her date Alex Hitchins? So now they are on a second date going to a Nick's game. Where they are seen. Again. This date doctor sounds like he could make this happen. Geoff calls. They set up the meeting. Say Albert and see his reaction."

Now as to Hitch asking Geoff about how he got his card, it was the card that he gave to Vance. Hitch gets suspisious because he never gave Albert his card.

Her job in speculation is what allows her to blame the Date doctor for being a "scam artist" and set up the event at the end of the day. It really is not a plot hole. You just have to think about it.
