Who else felt sorry for Chip?

...he first guy who flirted Sara?
I mean, the guy did everything OK. He had personality, charisma, charm, etc. What was what he done wrong? I´m pretty sure he would have been successful with almost any other woman.
Sara was such a difficult woman, IMO... She somehow demonstrated she couldn´t have been with anybody in her life if Hitch hadn´t existed...

Hi, did anyone else see the movie?

He did everything OK? He was delivering cheesy pickup lines with a nervous tone AND he wasn't listening to her at all! He acted like ANY other guy, he wasn't being different or whatever. Hitch even pointed out that Sara didn't believe a man could come up to her in a bar and be genuinely interested in her. Chip was interested to have sex with her, not in her. I felt sorry for him in a way, because I know a lot of men act like that, and when it doesn't work, they are dumb enough to wonder why. Well, it's kinda obvious why...

"Chip was interested to have sex with her, not in her"

What´s so evident about that for you? Because I didn´t think so at all

reply

Well he didn't want to befriend her, because he didn't listen to anything she was saying (which is where it fell apart for him mostly). He went to hit on her, which has been made obvious by what he said. Why would a guy hit on a girl if not to ultimately become physical with her?

Clearly you have some issues and/or have no feelings for men. While what he did was very common (guy trying to pick up a woman at a bar and wasn't original) I didn't think he did anything wrong. It takes guts to approach any woman and ask her out weather it's because he's just interested in getting her into bed with him or because he likes the woman and wants to get to know her better...and if that leads to sex then there's nothing wrong with that. It's normal. But she was at least rather kind rejecting him. When she said no, nicely, he kept at it in case she was saying no when she meant yes. Whatever the case, it was a perfect example of how many men try to pick up women. Nothing really wrong..but just too common.

I just watched the movie last night for the first time. I loved it so much I did the unthinkable, even though I love movies and have watched the same one tens of times, I watched this one twice in a row. It's kind of like The Wedding Date which is mostly geared for women while Hitch was more for men. I watched both and both are great...but I enjoyed Hitch much more! My favourite dating movie now...and a pleasant surprise since I usually don't enjoy Will Smith in his movies. This role, imho, suits him better.

Because he showed no interest in listening to her, even in the beginning when she is actually trying to turn him down nicely. This is also Hitch's core message -- women fall for guys interested in THEM, who listen to them. It's not rocket science.

The only thing Chip did right was have the confidence to approach her. Which was why she was also extremely nice when she first turned him down -- she acknowledged that it takes a lot to approach a stranger in a bar, and she appreciated the attention, then politely told him she wasn't interested. I thought it was a pretty nice speech actually.

Then it really falls apart as Chip (as others noted) is not listening to her AT ALL and in fact rudely first starts simply spouting off cheesy physicalities "You have great eyes/lips/etc." Then when she still politely asks him to leave, he insults her, asking what's wrong with her, why she's so guarded, etc.

She wasn't interested in him. She politely said so. If he'd smiled and thanked her and walked away, I could have looked past the cheesy intro and respected Chip a little. Instead he ignored every single word she said, continued to talk over her, and became a little creepy when he would STILL not take 'No' for an answer.

In a way, Chip was an important moment in the movie because he's a shadow of the sleazebag guy who wants to "hit and quit" her friend -- he doesn't see the woman as a person, just as something he wants on his own terms.

He wasn't listening to anything she was saying and he got meanly defensive when she showed she wasn't interested.

No game, no guile, no girl.

To his defense, that girl wasn't very interesting either. She did nothing to warrant the attraction she seemed to get.

Hell, BOTH of them handled it wrong. Chip was too pushy, and Sara came off too "oh my gawd can't ya see I'm just WAYYYY too damn good for the likes of you, you lowly peasant."

"They just don't realize." "Donnie can go in there and make them love me".

reply

She had every right to ignore him or tell him she wasn't interested from the get-go. Really, she could have just rolled her eyes and left which is what a lot of people would have done, but she tried to at least listen and talk to him. He just ignored her no's, which is pretty frustrating in a society that thinks "no" is always a "yes" in disguise.

"sorry for Chip" Not even a little. Chip was a salesman. Selling himself. In sales you get rejections. I'm sure Chip did not go home alone that night.

Nope, can't feel sorry for Chip. Chip was a Playa.

Exactly. If you want to get a lot of acceptances, you got to grow thick skin and get a lot of rejections. It's ridiculous to take them all personally.
