What I hope to see

It is safe to say that a sequel to The Golden Compass will never be made. I feel the adaptation of the His Dark Materials trilogy should just start from stratch: like what happened with the animated version of The Lord of the Rings. Ideally I would love to write and direct a new adaptation of the trilogy but I am realistic. What I would want to see is the film rights to be brought by a production company like Working Title Films or a similar company, make the trilogy in one go like Lord of the Rings (partly because the span of the trilogy is in a short windows and the two main characters are 12/13).
Hopefully the productions would get a good writer and I would want to see a quality director, my preferred choices would be Alfonso Cuaron, Tom Hooper or Joe Wright, though I would be perfectly happy with the likes of Duncan Jones or David Yates. The first one particularly I imagined had a Victorian, Steampunk look to it, with fantastic costumes, dark gothic buildng and a dirty, industrial setting.
An adaptation should not be afraid of the dark nature of the story like the Chris Weitz version and show there is a lot of peril in this world. Nor should the filmmakers should be afraid of the atheist message, I know people who are Christians and still enjoy the novels.

The other way it could go is if HBO make it into a TV series like they did with Game of Thrones which has been very successful. HBO care about the quality of their output, the Game of Thrones adaptation was very loyal to the source material and I think an TV adaptation would have a wider appeal to younger audiences.
