Would it work as a TV show?

Talking about HBO or AMC quality, no network of course. But I wonder if it would. Game of Thrones workes just fine, the non-readers love it, the readers love it, it looks great, feels great, a perfect show.

Now the His Dark Materials franchise might prove itself a bit harder, because of the amount of CGI needed, but do you guys think it could work? With 10 episodes (or such) you'd get 10 hours of story for the first novel and so on. A lot more time to get into the world, to explain how it works etc.

I'd say give it a try. Not that it will happen, though.

A TV show for this kind of universe-based, slightly educational/thought provoking story would work. You could focus more on the chapters, and repeat some of the theories. There could be more explained about the Goblers, Dust, some characters could've gained more depth.

That or a 2-part "TV movie". But the latter wouldn't allow any kind of budget. Same with a TV series (as you stated, high amount of CGI required). Not sure if the actors would be OK with it either, and we already got this movie out right now. Maybe as a cartoon?

Get the BBC to do it, all that they would need to do a creditable job is some decent funding.
The`ve even done some of Pullman`s other works a couple of years ago with a couple of his `Sally Lockheart` books.

And earlier there was `I Was A Rat`

I think that film is the ideal medium for His Dark Materials. Its very large-scale and fast-paced and those things lend themselves perfectly to film.

I think Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, a similar series, lends itself more to a HBO series, for instance. Its much more slow-paced and not as large-scale (its seven books rather than three, but isn't as eventful).
