Just Bad Timing. If This Were Realeased Today It Would Be A Smash.

Not only because of the hole left by "Harry Potter", but also the worldwide zeitgeist of hating or distrusting government and religious institutions that has struck a fever pitch over the last five years ( not saying a certain amount of people didn't dislike those institutions before, but now it's become more the rule and the exception ). This trilogy would really hit the culture spot so to speak.

If it had been a good movie that had followed the plot of the books at all, yes it would have been a smash.

The original cut did but the studio panicked and screwed it up in the editing process.
