Did anyone else think it was weird when....

At the beginning, when young Holly is with her friends talking about how she wants a boyfriend - they looked so young!!! I found it comical, lol! The script given to these girls sounded like it was meant for older girls. And then, the girls start talking to a group of older looking teenage boys, it was so weird! It almost looked like 10-year-old's talking to 17-year-old boys :p

Other than that, some parts of the movie were heartwarming. Holly was a bit annoying at the beginning but she began to grow on me. Overall, it was an ok movie, but i probably wouldn't watch again :p

I know they looked young, but I thought it was because I'm in my mid-50s... honestly, the older I get, the younger young people seem to me... I was hoping that maybe they were a bit older than they looked in the movie, like 12...and that's about when girls start thinking about boys... that much I do remember from being that age... I've seen this movie several times... in fact, I'm watching it again right this minute!

... the hardest thing in this world is to live in it...

I'm in my 20's and thought they looked young, but now that I think about it I was about 10 or 11 when I started getting interested in boys (not dating as my mom would of killed me !) It was mainly the part where the girls were talking to 17-year-old boys that I thought was weird, lol.

It was weird that what looked like 9 and 10 year-old girls were trying to hang out with 17-year-olds, although I'm not sure how old they were.

They were all 13 years old ... They mention it in the movie and they all went to school together (except for Patrick's character) ...

I thought they looked and acted about 13, so pretty accurate for me. I did find the young Holly character mostly endearing, but the part I found weird was: She was sweet to approach young Darcy, who was afraid to sit on Santa's lap, but her motivation was probably to meet Darcy's cute older brother. However, when she offered to go up there with Darcy to see Santa, the way she said it was a bit intimidating. I can't really describe it, but she had almost a mocking look on her face and mocking voice, when she said "Well...Darcy...how about if I come along?" Did anyone else think this?

I didn't think it was mocking (though now that you mention, I can see how it could come across that way). It sounded to me as though the actress was a little stiff delivering her lines.

reply

Yes, I think you're right. It may have come across that way. Maybe it was nerves, due to being around her cute brother.

I watched it again this year for the first time in ages and I didn't realise how bad this part was. I thought the girls did look and act and sound 13, but I also thought the guys they were claiming to be their boyfriends looked about 20 (and 17 would have been inappropriate enough).
I'm guessing either there was a lack of communication between the person who did the main casting and the person who brought in the extras, or they figured they just needed to show Darcy's friends talking to any group of guys so it wouldn't matter as no-one would notice.
But this forum shows that people have noticed. It does matter.
They end up looking like a grooming gang!
