does anyone know if the UK version is actually cut and if so what is cut out of it.
the runtime in IMDB states 128mins, yet the DVD on amazon.co.uk suggests 120mins. the IMDB website (certification section) does also suggest that the UK version of this has been cut.
i really hope this hasn't been cut - any further info here would be much appreciated.
in addition to the above i have just found out (in a brad mcgann interview on bbc movies website) that the original cut was 3 hours long but he was forced to cut this down to 2 hours. i hope to hell that we get a director's cut of this in the near future!
from the BBFC website (link below if you want to take a look):
When submitted to the BBFC the work had a running time of 127m 33s. The running time of this film was calculated from the measured length of 11305+5 ( feet + frames ).
To obtain this category cuts of 1m 56s were required. The cuts were Cuts for Category. The distributor chose to remove a scene which showed consensual asphyxiation in a sexual context in order to achieve a '15'. An uncut '18' was available to the distributor.
Don't worry, you aren't missing much, although that scene does, I think, make an interesting statement about the character. Especially in contrast with his brother's lack on intimacy in another scene with Miranda Otto's character.
And there were none of the cut scenes on the Australian dvd, although I did finally get to listen to the director's comments which IMO were fascinating!
"...consensual asphyixiation in a sexual context..." I may not be missing much, but I am missing something. Which character are you referring to? Paul? Someone said that there may be hints of a sexual something between Paul and Celia in the book...and in the film Paul does inhale some drug...how deep is his despair? Does this mean that I must buy Southern Hemishere DVDs from Amazon Australia to get the full picture?
Update: Andrew knocks and wakes up Paul at the motel on the morning that they were to see the lawyers together. He gives Paul their father's cremated remains, hands him his passport that he didn't even know was missing and chides him for lying about getting in late for the funeral. Paul must have left the funeral without ever going in, went to a pub and had the above mentioned encounter, emotionally repressing these long buried feelings by continuing to engage in life risking behavior.
If I remember correctly, the journalist (Paul?) grabs and wraps his own belt around his neck and pulls it tight as he reaches climax in order to heighten the intensity of the moment(?). I think at the time he was having sex with a non significant character - someone from the pub.
I don't agree, I think the film is fine as it is. Director's cut does not necessarily mean better, look at "Apocalypse Now Redux". You can't improve on perfection.
I am sure there are many films which need a director's cut, but I don't want to see a 3 hour version of "In My Father's Den", as I can't see what it would add.
just watched the UK rental of this - very good film (ran for 2h 00m 18s) and i do wish their was either deleted scenes as extras, or just the directors cut available.
anyway - it was a little slow to start, but film was enthralling keeping me glued to the screen till the end.
So, let me see if I can get this right. I have not read the book, so please bear with me. I thought Paul and Jackie did have sex and then she also had sex with his dad. If Paul and Jackie did not have sex, then Paul had to be sure that Celia was his sister. If they did have sex, then it would have to have been a timing thing for him to be sure that Celia was not his baby. Jackie also mentions being invisible to Paul. I guess this is after he sees his dad with Jackie. Entering the den, did Paul actually see anything or just hear or what? Can someone please enlighten me?
Paul and Jackie did have sex and Jackie did have sex with Paul's dad. Paul's dad walked in on Paul and Jackie and asks if they are doing it safe. Paul confirms this. This is how he knows that Celia is not his daughter. I think Paul actually sees his dad and Jackie (at the same time his mother does).
