auto-asphyxiation

Ok,
to be honest I had no idea what this is, but have looked it up on the net after reading about it in one of the reviews. Still had no idea it existed, but then I'm obviously too innocent.

Just wondering on this topic, if anyone knows if it was cut from the UK version? I noticed from the main page thatthe UK version is "certificate 15 (cut)" and I certainly dont recall and such goings on in the film?

alternatively I'm just going mad and it was there...

can anyone clarify for me?
cheers

That was a scene I found quite strange..
My final thought about it was that it should show that also Paul had some underlying psychological difficulties, involving sexuality (because of his father) and violence (the experiences he had in the war zones)

In any case it didn't seem to me that she (the girl from the bar) was very amused by his belt-trick...

I just finished watching the movie, and i was a little weirded out by that scene too. I don't understand why he was choking himself with his belt. Can someone explain please?

This subject was in the news/public sphere a lot here in Australia when Michael Hutchins from INXS was found in a hotel room in Sydney having died while engaging in the practice a few years back. Paula Yates ( his wife at the time) argued that he didn't suicide - that he had gone too far and it resulted in accidental death, but Michaels dad denied all this and said he just suicided.

The producer of IMFD says in the commentary that comes with the Aus DVD that he put this scene in and the scene where "crack " is used in order to show that Paul was emotionally damaged character - he had shut down his emotional feelings- in order to get on with his life - do the war photography without the emotional invovement- something he is not proud of when he goes to the school to give the talk.
His brother too was emotionally damaged - he was incapable of a satisfactory physical relationship with his wife - he rejects her in bed- his traumatised childhood just expressed itself differently.
