I had to see this move. I ordered from Amazon UK and got it in one week. It would not play on any of my dvd players, so I sat at the computer and watched it, undisturbed, not moving the entire time. It was mesmerizing. Not just Matthew but all the actors. Probably the best movie I've seen in a long time maybe ever. It is a shame we miss out on great movies and greater actors in US. Hollywood has no clue. I became a fan of Matthew's because of those blue eyes on MI-5, I will stay a fan with this encapsulating performance he gives us in this film. I look forward to much more.
How great to read someone else saying what a great movie this is..... I love this movie, I think it is clever, thought provoking, compelling, moving, etc and for MM is sublime......SPOILER************** i love "What you set out to be Is not always what you become", Miranda Otto --underused?
I really enjoyed it, too. Not just because of MM...although he was great in it. I loved the whole plot and the NZ backdrop was amazing, as always (and no, I'm not a kiwi!)
****SPOILER******ALERT*********
I love the whole concept that through all of the sagas and dramas that went on in their lives, the whole climax was simply based on a misunderstanding! Wow! What a great twist!
Do you think that he ends up with Celia's mother in the end???
No, I want him too, coz i love happy endings...... but i think they became friends....I have to confess i needed to watch it 3 times to really understand it......but there are soo many things, and lines i love about this movie... "What you set out to be is not what you always become"
Have you listened to the director's commentary? I got a chance to and it was really interesting. Lots of explanation as to why they did certain things. Also answered a few questions that I had.
I don't think Paul & Jax get together either, just friendship. Celia saying, "Adios, brother" to Paul still haunts me. So many if onlys in this movie. I hope it comes to big screen in the US.
Trixiaria, Since you have subtitles could you be wonderful and tell me what Celia says in two instances, please?
1) while he is cleaning her knee in the den, after she asks about the books and he says his father never told him, liked to keep it a mystery, Celia says, "Fathers.....?
2) they run through the rain and are sitting under the tree, and Paul says, well you are not the first to feel that way about their parents, anyway it was a long time ago. And Celia says, ".......? I was only sixteen"
I would be most grateful!
Also, any surprises on the director's commentary you'd care to share?
I think I am glad it was out of chronological order. I think it would be devastating without that last scene. Is it true, that was an add on scene?
I know the the second one is. Celia says, I know I was'nt planned my mum was only 16. I got it the third time I saw it. I too dont have captioning. I ordered it through amazonuk.because I had to see Matthew, I live in Texas. We are not as fortunate to have him play at our theaters in the US. So I've been ordering anything I can get my hands on, that way I can see him whenever I feel like.
I just saw this terrific film at the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison. It was a huge hit with the entire audience. I am hoping it will be released to the general public soon. I would definitely plan on seeing it again.
I agree, It is a wonderful movie. Matthew was superb in it and he showed all his acting skills. What a Brllant actor he is. It was beautifully directed.
Most enjoyable. a movie I will watch again and again.
Someone has to tell me---did I misunderstand the ending? I thought she was dead by the accident his brother's wife had caused. The ending scene, I thought , was just a remindimg of how they both had bid farewell, so that that people know that they parted in friendship. Am I wrong or right?
