The magic word gets used too much in this beautiful honest film to get a nomination for best foreign film. Ings dont go down well for the bible belts of the world. Yet i think it is the best thing i've seen for years. As for the reviewer who said that Emily barclay's performance was wooden!!! Hello!!! Do you know any 15 year olds? Her beautifully nuanced balance between lumpish teendom and magic sensitivity was inspired.
Here, Here, Chaired a question and Answer session with the director. Brad McGann, Jodie Rimmer,(Emily's mother), Colin Moy( the brother)...and Emily, they were all terriffic, (i've known Colin and Jodie for years and was so pleased with their excellent work in this film) and Emily does a great job of a teen, certainly better than the hot lesbian pervy feel of thirteen, and yes, I do know the director was a woman, but Emily gives the best performance of a kid I've seen since jena Malone in 'Bastard out of Carolina" are you in the States? Has the film opened there?
We are still waiting for this in the UK, everything we have read sounds brilliant, by all accounts Matthew Macfadyen was also fantastic portraying a very complex and damaged character of Paul.
Matthew macfadyen is brillant in this movie. His acting is superb. He should win an Oscar for his performance. He sizzles on screen. You will not be disappointed. It is a must for all Matthew macfadyen fans.
I saw the movie a few weeks ago here in the cinema (it came to the screen in Germany here now), and it has been probably one of the top three movies of this year I have seen----and I have seen plenty! The screen presence of Matthew is blowing, truly amazing and he would definitely deserve this Oscar so much, though I doubt that he will even be nominated. Shame on the jury. Hope to see more Matthew movies soon!
