When is it arriving in the States?

Does anyone know when or if it will be released in the US?

reply

I Don't think it's being released in the US

reply

originally USA was on the list of release dates but it was removed. I'm sure I heard it got picked up by a USA distributer (and it's date might have been pushed back for unknown reasons) but don't take my word for it.

reply

well then, i hate them.

I saw it at last year's Toronto Film Fest, have been dying to see it again ever since, and my educated guess is ... never. Reason? It's simply too good -- American audiences just aren't ready for a mature, intelligent drama where the characters converse like real people rather than actors taking a break from cell phone calls to their agents to recite a few lines of plastic, unnatural exposition-heavy dialogue in front of a camera. Plus any Hollywood exec seeing this film would flip over the possibilities of a dumbed-down, sanitized, happy-ending American remake. ("This is just the comeback vehicle Ben Affleck needs, and Lindsay Lohan's been looking for some deeper material ...")

reply

The US release was delayed because the film is too long. There are 10 - 20 minutes that the studio would love to chop to get it under the critical 2 hour mark, then they'd be happy to put it out there. I love this movie, but let's face it, there are some scenes that really don't add to the drama.

So why haven't those cuts happened? It's one of those classic tussles between art and business.

reply

Didn't like the condescending attitude. I happen to love these types of movies and hate Micheal Bay. (However I did like the Ben Affleck insult)

However, it is true that American movie distributors have a grossly under-estimated interpretation of our intelligence and taste. Not all of us went to see "The Longest Yard" or "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", or like to listen to Roger Ebert. They can't grasp what we can handle, or what we like to enjoy.

reply

hey, roger ebert is the only trustworthy critic. i may not always agree with him, but he judges every movie on its own terms, and is completely unprententious. unlike some people! and, when you get down to it, what's so terrible about cheap thrills, hot babes, and fast cars? as long as that's not the only reason you go to the movies, i don't see the problem.

USA WORLD PREMIERE AT SEATTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST 6/10/05!!!

reply

Heh, the 'USA World Premiere' - thats a bit of an oxymoron isn't it? :)

reply

Yes, it came to SIFF's last weekend for it's US Premire (and it was my last show), and I loved it! It was the only film from New Zealand, a place I'm fascinated about, so I bought the ticket in a heartbeat.

But one quarrel about the US release date:

They want to make it SHORTER?!!! How dumb do movie distributors think we Americans are? Not all of us are hard-core Micheal Bay and MTV fans.

So-I have to see this movie! Can anybody recommend a site that I can enter the title and see when it will be in my area???

Live in what you love.

reply

It's not even available on DVD at Netflix. Sigh.

reply

Why don't you ask somebody in NZ to send it to you? Send me a private message and I'll see what I can do.

reply

I have had it on DVD for quite sometime. It is region two, but it you don't have a dual region DVD player, it is quite easy to burn without regions if you have a computer. I got mine while working in the UK, but I'm sure it is available on Amazon.co.uk

reply

I know! If you haven't already, request it to be offered. There's a section in the contact us/service area where you can suggest titles for Netflix to stock. Maybe if we can get a lot of people to request it, they'll find a way to offer it to us.

This was shown at the 2006 Portland International Film Festival last February...

It has to be coming out on DVD in the US sometime soon if it was making the festival rounds. I can hope, anyway.
