After you watch Rome for the first time or subsequent time, I suggest that you watch I, Claudius.
I, Claudius is much older show, but it picks up toward the end of Augustus' reign and you get to see just how conniving his wife Livia became. Also, the show spans the reigns of Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and ends with Nero.
A must watch for people who enjoyed Rome and Game of Thrones.
I, Claudius is magnificent. One of the best series I've ever seen. HBO's Rome was pretty good but I think I, Claudius was the much better of the two.
shareWhen I, Claudius first aired in the US in the mid 70s, on PBS’ Masterpiece Theatre, it was An Event. The cast of gifted English stage/screen actors delivered superb performances of an inspired screenplay. Although I was too young to appreciate such a sophisticated story, I remember hearing adults discussing how great it was. I caught up with the series in the mid 80s and finally understood the hype.
