Doesn't completely answer your question, of course. Maybe Rome is more popular because Latin is more familiar than Greek, being the basis of the romance languages, the Roman Catholic church, and is even seen in English to this day, whether in its roots or legal jargon. Rome conquered a much greater area than Greece ever did, so its history is more deeply felt.
Of course Greece is still with as well, such as the marathon race, the great Greek philosophers, and the idea of democracy. But its architecture, copied by the Romans, and with us to this day (think of the US Capitol) we perhaps more closely associate with the power of Rome than its Greek origins.
The Greeks DID NOT create the marathon race! Geez! Ignorant much!? The Marathon was introduced in the modern Olympics in 1896 in honor of Robert Browning’s poem celebrating the fictional athlete Pheidippides.
Rome stole all of Hellas’ culture and tried to pas it off as its own, including the Gods and the battle Phalanx.
Greek pizza is always better than Italian pizza.
To be clear: I’ve great respect for Italian culture. I just think that most Americans have the cultural and intellectual depth of a puddle of piss and have no idea of how much of a plundered cultural debt Rome owes to Greece.
The Romans: they crucified my Lord, then they created His Church. I’ve got mixed feelings about that, boyhowdy.
NOPE! Nothing! You could try: I, Claudius BBC TV series(1976) Or The Borgias(2011-2013) WAY later! ..but with good production, and scheming, and sex, and violence, and etc;-)
this is one of the best shows ever made such a shame they only made 2 seasons. i have never seen an old roman tv show i liked as much as this. Only thing that would come close would be the movie Gladiator from the year 2000 that movie kicked ass
