Early seasons vs. Newer seasons
I think the early episodes show what this show really is when labeled reality while the newer episodes show in stark contrast what is heavily forced, set up and played. Kenny and Spencer in the first many episodes are real people that go at competitions like you or me would, they have actual conversations and react or behave like any real person. If you watch any of the newer episodes you will see that these aren't even real people. Kenny hasn't the slightest semblance of normal behavior and all his gags or obviously set up M. Night style twists could only be possible with the planning and assistance of the crew.
Spenny in the later episodes is forced to be the extremely gullible stuff shirt speaking about things like an intellectual's rehearsed script and yelling "KENNY!" all the time. Just watch the first episode and one of the newest ones and its so overtly obvious that the show has skimped on reality in the interest of making it more entertaining but doing so has made it less entertaining because I know I'm not watching the truth. Its like watching a Fox reality show after you've caught on to all that really cheap editing and musical cues on everyone's expressions that were clipped into as reactions that they didn't have at that time. Like when someone says a joke and they edit in a scene of everyone being quiet.
The show could have continued to be legitimate while still being entertaining but all they did was make two completely unbelievable, unrealistic characters that have no grounding in reality.
If the fashion show or chef episode were made today, Kenny would have some flash back evil scheme where he set up some kind of rube goldberg style plot to trick Spenny and sabotage him.
