I fainted

well, almost, I had to be taken out, just after the first abortion. It's a very good, realistic movie. I think it was jsut thinking about the actual process of abortion rather than seeing it (which you don't really), again, very good film.

It was a very specific reflection of the 50's abortions performed by women/men who was not qualified.

You call yourself Sweeney Todd, and you almost fainted at the sight of a basin of soapy water? Sheeesh!

My stomach turned when they first revealed the cheese-grater. I loved the way the family flinched when it was revealed in court. Luckily we, the viewer, are shown what it's used for early on.

Your thread prompts a question: How graphic is the depiction of abortion in this movie? I've been wanting to watch this, but if the filmmakers show the whole procedure up close and personal, then I'd rather not watch it. I get squeamish when it comes to this...

It's not too graphic at all, in reality. Happily, you don't see much of it. Don't let it stop you watching a marvellous film, with an outstanding lead performance.

you see the girl's bare legs open (from the side, not so you see in between!) and just the back of vera while she inserts the 'syringe', then vera's hand pumping the water so not really anything 'graphic'

You don't see any blood at all. It's very sensitively handled, and this really shouldn't be an issue for you at all. I understand, I'm not too good with the gore either, but really, that's absolutely nothing that you don't need to see.

You see Vera preparing her equipment and you see her administering the solution - it's not at all graphic but the first one still made my stomach turn over.

It's not graphic at all. But I still had some of the same reaction as OP. Too me it's the thought of having something stuck up there that shouldn't be there that gives me extreme, physical pains.

Don't misunderstand, though. I LOVE this film, it's one of my favorites. And I believe in womens right to decide over their own bodies.

It's just that the words "illeagal abortion" give me pains. Same goes for knitting needles. I believe I have a vivid imagination. I can actually feel how it must have been going through this operations.
