Why did the girl get sick? (spoilers)

Was it that the syringe was not clean enough and she got an infection?

reply

I'm still not sure. It kind of makes you wonder how many other girls might have gotten ill and maybe even died without Vera realizing it.

Something tells me it wasn't an infection, I think it was something else.

I think that's possible, or one of the other instruments: the bowl, the towel, the surface she was laying on, etc.
Or, she could have maybe accidentally caused a laceration (maybe hurrying because the girl's mother was interogating her while she was trying to get it done?) and that went septic.

reply

Did't Vera infuse soapy water into the uterus?

reply

Septic shock, most likely.

reply

Perhaps it was a bit too much, as far as the amount of fluid is concerned.... Or any number of things that could have accidently happened.

reply

Leftover products of conception. Abortion complication that is no fault of the person doing that type of abortion, as opposed to a vacuum aspiration.

Regardless of how clean Vera tried to be, the equipment could never be sterilised as medical equipment could be in a hospital. Unfortunately, any type of medical procedure carried out in a non-sterilised enviroment by a person without real medical training is never going to be safe - plus, you can still pick up infections in a hospital enviroment so immagine the odds outside one.
Then of course there could be other factors, the woman could have had an undetected gynecological problem which was aggravated by the attempted abortion.
I'm not entirely sure - I haven't seen this film in ages, do they give a reason?

reply

They say, and I'm inclined to believe them from working in hospitals, hospitals is the number one place to catch something, which seems odd since that's supposed to be the most sterilized place there is.

reply

Yeah, but hospitals are filled with people, many sharing room, and doctors/nurses not good enough to clean their hands. I read that rings on nurses hands are a main reason for viruses spreading.

They blew up Congress!!! HAHAHA!

reply

Then there's one reason for germs spreading like they do. Don't think that they wash their hands like they should now days. Working in a hospital (administrative) and working in a health care office (none clinical) I became a bit of a germaphobic and find myself washing my hands all the time.

reply

The girl might have done something unsafe that she didn't know was unsafe long after Vera was out of the house.

Such as douching, swimming, having sex again, even drinking alcohol.

And there's a risk of infection even in a legal abortion performed by a doctor in a clinic. Let alone one a very primitive one performed by an amateur in a bedroom using a tube and soap.

Having grown up after the legalization of abortion, I never gave much thought to how illegal abortions used to be done (aside from hearing grim jokes about if Roe v. Wade is ever overturned, it's back to coathangers)

Watching this movie, I started to wonder about Vera Drake's method--was it really that easy? safe and effective? and if so, why did so many women die from illegal abortions? So found this article, which answers some of the questions on this topic:

Great movie--Imelda Staunton is fantastic.
