The lead actress executed her role as Vera Drake. I caught the movie towards the middle and missed the first half. How did a mild-mannered, soft spoken woman like her get into performing illegal abortions? Was it financial hardships or was she doing it because she felt she was helping those young women out?

Vera does the illegal abortions because she wants to help out the young women who have no money and no one else to go to. She has a kind heart he believes she can perform the abortion safely - Never for the money, it's mentioned that she never thought to ask for payment. Lily charges 2 pounds and 2 shillings, which she does without Vera knowing.
