When does Ratatouille take place
I know Pixar plays with motifs and makes the time frame vague but when does Ratatouille take place? I say the early 80s. Post it notes on the fridge and the ego line "Hit me with your best shot."
shareI was wondering the same thing. The vintage telephone and adding machine suggest the fifties perhaps, but the use of a hair sample for paternity testing would mean it's a several decades later.

I'd guess 1970-1975. Cars changed markedly after that.
As to DNA testing, just an anachronism.
What about Colette's motorcycle, though? It looked decidedly modern.

Yeah, looks much more modern ! In fact apart from 2CV, DS 19, Citroen tube, Facel Vega, and an Isetta (the health inspector's vehicle), no other car is identifiable.
So the motorbike is probably just another anachronism.
I just checked, DNA tests began 1980, so you could say this is the time of the movie. All cars mentioned were in wide use at that time. The Facel Vega would already be a collector's item. The motorbike could possibly be from that vintage.
And radically new cars had not yet appeared.
Internet Movie Car Database identifies a 2001 Citroen in the scene where Colette skids to a halt at the stop light. The brand of the bike isn't real; it's 'Calahan,' in reference to one of the filmmakers.
One user posted a picture from the scene where Skinner is chasing Remy by the river, and you can just see the Pizza Planet 'YO' delivery truck from 'Toy Story' in the far background.
