I was never a fan of Hanks as Langdon. I get that he and Howard are buddy buddy since they basically made each other stars with Splash but I never bought him as the lead character. Harrison Ford he aint.
Tim Olyphant would have been 36 in 2006 when the Da Vinci Code came out. If i could go back and retroactively cast someone different for the role of Robert Langdon, he is my choice.
Hanks was solid and effective as Langdon but a younger man could have allowed for a more physically robust performance as well as perhaps a little romance with Audrey Tautou's character Sophie. Matt Damon would have been my choice.

Jason Bourne as Robert Langdon ??? Hanks is good as Langdon and plays him as a very smart academic and not as some Indiana Jones type hero. As to the OP's choice,Timothy Olyphant, not a bad idea, but I don't think he's ever had the responsibility of headlining a big movie such as this was in its day.🐭

Langdon was never a traditional action hero, so casting him as one would have missed the point, and a romantic entanglement with Sophie would merely have clouded the narrative. I don't understand why people want to keep pushing films into obvious pigeon-holes.

It was refreshing that the rapport between Sophie and Langdon was not turned into a romance.
It wasn't necessary to the movie which was interesting enough without that.
I completely 1,000% agree! Tom Hanks is literally a human "sleeping pill"....... WHY DOES HE ALWAYS "WHISPER" TALK (MONOTONE)? He seems to only go through the motions as well, while the entire cast seemed alot more genuine, enjoying to play their roles! Tom Hanks had also this in other movies too, where he just puts me to sleep......

shareSadly, in 2006 Downey was uninsurable, and Harrison Ford was 64 years old. Either would have been better in the role at some other time, I mean Hanks wasn't awful and I'm still grateful they didn't use the lifeless George Clooney (or Brad Pitt), but he just wasn't the guy from the books.
Maybe Christian Bale would have done. He was a little young at the time (32) and Langdon should be around forty, but he could project the right mix of intelligence, sophistication, and athleticism. But there's something stiff and chilly about him, something I'd never liked, so I'm not sure he'd have worked.
Harrison Ford would've done it as he was in need of a hit film at the time..in fact he even said he was surprised he wasnt cast as Langdon was described as looking like him in the novel , Plus it wouldve been fun for audiences to see Indiana Jones chasing the Holy Grail in the present day (in many ways TDVC is like a modern day remake of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sir Leigh Teabing = Walter Donavan). otherwise Russell Crowe or Liam Neeson would've probably been better than Hanks.
Ford wouldve probably had to be paired up with an older actress - Braveheart/Bonds Sophie Marceau an obvious choice (she was in the running for the role)
