the movie had a terrific premise, but didn't quite do it

Just watched this again on FX.

When I saw the trailer for this movie in 2004, I was so rattled. I thought, "I have to see this movie." Then I ended up majorly disappointed by the ending. Does anyone have any suggestions for how the movie could have been done/written better?

my theory is that if you are a person who believes that there is a possibility that ghosts exist, then the ending was a disappointment (not to say that I believe in ghosts, but it sure makes for a much scarier film). If you are a more rational, scientific thinker, you would say that all of these notions (imaginary friends and ghosts) are creations of the human imagination, and therefore, you would have been happy with the ending.

Interested to hear some thoughts...

I don't find ghost type movies scary; more sinister (think satanic/possession) supernatural movies yes, like the Exorcist, but failing that, something like this is good. I'm definitely from the opposite camp to scientific/rational, but I still prefer this to a ghost story.

Oh come on, if Charlie would have been a ghost, the movie would have been totally unoriginal. It has been done hundreds of times before.

Yes, but split personalities have been done to death too.

I hated the ending b/c it made the rest of the movie seem illogical.
