Does anyone feel the ending was put in for the sake of it?

It's so out of place.

It's like they thought 'Hmm, David is dead, a happy ending. But it doesn't seem deep enough, happy endings are so old-fashioned. Why don't we put in a twist and make it seem that Emily is in a mental hospital, even if it doesn't make any sense at all! That'll keep the viewers thinking about the movie!'

I knew mental diseases are hereditary, but honestly placing a girl in such a foreboding mental institution? It just feels like they added that bit to add an extra 'twist' that was confusing only to keep the viewers interested.

Yeah, but usually these kind of movies do have some sorta twist. I didn't mind the twist but I think it would have been better with the alternative endings instead if the one they used.

The version I watched had a different ending, if you've seen the alternate endings, the one I saw was the one where she drew the double head. I actually liked this ending, it seemed more in place, but I did see the mental institution and was glad that the one I saw did not conclude that way.

It makes sense. It wasn't the best ending out of all the alternate endings, but it makes sense. Her character is just a child. Children cannot psychologically deal with the same things that adults can, and they can't understand what's going on like adults can. Her character's father killed her mother, that was traumatizing enough. To add to it, she saw her mother dead in the bathtub. Can you imagine waking up at night and finding your mother dead in a bath of her own blood? And as a young child? Then, on top of that, when she was already pretty screwed up, her dad's MPD gets out of hand. Keep in mind, she's a child. she doesn't know what MDP is. She only had a vague idea of what was going on. All of a sudden her dad was going around saying he was one person, then all of a sudden he'd switch to being someone completely different. That also could have easily messed with her head. On top of that, her dad isn't just going around with two personalities, but one of his personalities is killing people. The family pet, the girlfriend, the cop...that's a total of three people and an animal her dad killed in such a short matter of time. That's traumatizing. Then, on top of everything else, her dad tried to *kill* her. It's traumatizing enough when someone tries to murder you, something that will take years of psychology to get over the fear, but for your own father to be the one trying to kill you? Finally, at the end, her father is shot. In front of her. So, her mother was murdered, and her father was shot.

That's a bulk paragraph full of traumatizing events that happened all in a short period of time. Just one of those things will put you in front of a psychologist, and she had *all* of them happen, and she's just a little girl. An adult wouldn't be alright in the head after all of that, so it's absurd to think a little girl would be just fine. So really, it makes perfect sense that she would be admitted into a mental institute. There would be a lot of work that would need done on her to even get her back to semi-normal.

Also, how is David dying a happy ending? This is probably one of the only situations where the bad guy dying is not happy, because the bad guy was just a personality. David wasn't a cold blooded killer, he cared about his daughter and his wife. He had an undiagnosed mental illness that would be extremely hard to treat even if any adults were aware of it. People with MPD are not aware of what's happening when they switch to other personalities and they can't control what their other personalities do or say. On top of David losing his life because of his mental illness, what about his daughter? She watched her father get shot. I've already explained how traumatizing that is. That's not happy.

Anyways, I watched this movie as I cleaned my room so I wasn't paying attention to the whole entire thing, so correct me if any facts are wrong, but even with the possibility of some misinformation, it seems pretty likely that the character of Emily would end up in a mental hospital. When you think about it, even though it's not the best ending, it's still the ending that actually makes the most amount of sense.

Man it's not a mental hospital but the children's hospital in New York where Katherine is working. She's probably in an isolated part initially since she can be dangerous to other kids (the dolls and the bug give you the hint)
