Question about the window scene............(spo ilers)

Okay, when Elizabeth shows up at the house she knocks on the door. No one answers and she walks in. They show a clip of David with his headphones on in another room unable to hear the knock. Then she goes upstairs and sees Emily sitting on the bed. Emily is playing a "game" with Charlie. He's hiding in the closet. How could David have gotten upstairs into the closet then transformed over to Charlie without Elizabeth seeing? That part doesn't make sense

Later on in the movie, it shows that he never unpacked the headphones or notebook (& the notebook was empty). Everytime David thought he was doing that, he had really been acting as Charlie.
