According to the director's commentary, the insect wore a protective sheath and was never actually pierced by the hook.

I know it's lame... but I hate watching anything die for real in a movie. Bug, roach, spider, you name it... lol.

Whether they really hurt it or not, the mere idea of impaling it like that to catch fish that they probably weren't going to eat is barbaric.

The bug wasnt hurt during the shooting. You can now move along. Btw, the bug had many children and now lives in new york as a personal fitness trainer for homeless people. Happy end.

Thank goodness for that! Thank you for putting my mind at rest: I can now sleep easily knowing that the bug and their family have moved on from its traumatic brush with Hollywood!!
