This one detail from the original night that they referred to twice...

I just saw this film for the first time and thought it was great, better than the first one and I loved the very clever ending.

I like how for the most part we see Jesse seems to be the one most affected by the first night, and then we learn that Julie was stuck on that night too.

But I am wondering what people think about Jesse's memory of a sexual encounter that didn't occur. I guess I get it, but I really wouldn't expect it happen for such an important night. And then he inadvertently gaslights her here too.

I'm thinking this could mean that for Jesse, sex is an element that makes the idea of that night more perfect. And Julie calls his version an idealization too. The way Julie referred to the moment in her journal made it seem she had read it since, and I would expect to her to have read it recently specially to compare it with his book; so I think it's strange that she goes on to be gaslighted by Jesse and even say they did it not once but twice.

What do you think?

Edit: It actually hits a sad note for me now, that the memory of this night that was so important and had such big consequences for them both (Jesse went on to write a book about it, had dreams about her, etc) would be changed. It doesn't have to be sad, maybe it's a point they're making about memories being this copy of the real thing; but it's all we have. And then he doesn't really have the real thing, just a memory he thinks is accurate.

What?? To quote Celine, "Yeah, what was I supposed to say? That I remember the wine in the park, and... us looking about the stars fading away, as the sun came up! We had sex twice, you idiot!"

There's a whole exchange...there's no misremembering or falsifying.

Ok, it's interesting that you say it like that, it didn't cross my mind to just assume it was true.

I assumed she had been gaslighted because earlier in the film we have this scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcsByxGdYO0 which tells me at least that her memory isn't too good.

And for some reason I thought the first film left it clear they didn't, but man, I just went back to watch that bit in Before Sunrise and I don't know what I was thinking! It does look like they will do it when it cuts. Though I guess it stays ambiguous still.

I'll need to rewatch the entire thing to understand how I felt when I wrote the original post.

You sure like to use the word gaslight. I thought it was pretty clear that she was lying when they first argue about it. He's adamant and almost offended that she doesn't remember, and she goes from denying it to playing coy. She's supposedly basing it off a journal entry that she doesn't even have in front of her, and not her own memory.

Later on she outright admits that she lied, explains why and even says that they had sex twice. I'm guessing you missed that, because to still assume that they didn't have sex would just be just twisting the details for no reason.
