This movie was obviously made in Australia (actors, right-side-drive bus). Why did they try to say it was in LA?

South Africa, actually, is where it was filmed.

Many former British colonies do. Here's a world map (blue is left drive):

One of the strangest setups I've ever seen is part of the A20 freeway in Montreal, where you drive in the left lanes but it doesn't interfere with connecting right-drive roads. It's weird.

Most legit movies will always tell you where they were filmed in the end of the end credits: "Filmed in South Africa, Filmed at Pinewood Studios, Filmed entirely in sunny Hollywood, CA,", etc.

Remember that.
