Both Hilary and her mum are looking for the perfect man. That's what this movie is mainly about.

The perfect man isn't really "anybody", it's someone that Hilary and her friend dream up to keep her mom in the same town. They talk to her friend's uncle about what makes someone a "perfect man" which then ends up being him. In a sense it could be Hilary's bf too. But mostly it's just the ficticious person they make up.

Yes, there was no real perfect man, the guy was just destined to be with Holly's mum.
