It wasn’t filmed in Brooklyn. It was filmed at an apartment building in a neighbourhood of Toronto, Canada called Cabbagetown. Here’s some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabbagetown%2C_Toronto
It's set in Brooklyn Heights, and the exterior shots were filmed there.
shareIf you’re referring to the apartment building, I can guarantee you with 100% certainty that it’s in TORONTO. I lived in that building from 1985 – 1997 and my grandmother still resides there. I visited her during the filming process and even saw Hilary outside her apartment window. The shots around the Brooklyn Bridge were filmed on location in New York City, but all the apartment shots were Toronto.
Yes, the interior sets were filmed in a studio and on location in Toronto, and the exterior (location) shots of NY were filmed in Brooklyn Heights. For example the scene where Hillary Duff and Chris Noth's character are driving to the restaurant was filmed near Prospect Pack. The exterior shots, not close-ups. The same with the establishing street scenes.
The first poster asked what part of Brooklyn it was, and you see lots of the Heights in the movie, so I assumed she wanted to know what part of Brooklyn that was supposed to be.
You see, when the original poster asked, "Does anyone know which part of Brooklyn they were living in…Because I haven’t seen a part of Brooklyn that nice!" I was under the impression that she had been to Brooklyn and was inquiring as to which street (not district) the apartment building was on (i.e. part of Brooklyn they were "living" in). If that’s the case, well then, this YouTube video says it all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0uSonR4olE
Below is a complete listing of all the Toronto locations where filming occurred (courtesy of the city’s own web site) and here’s the link: http://www.toronto.ca/tfto/newy.htm

While I don’t refute scenes were also filmed on location in Brooklyn, such as Prospect Park, you can clearly see that there was a lot more filming done in Toronto than just "interior sets" and "close-ups". For example, the high school that Hilary's character attended is called Danforth Tech, and is a well-known Toronto school. Here’s a pic of the building exterior from Danforth’s official site: http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/danforthcti/images/news/band.jpg. I'm not trying to start an argument, but simply clearing things up.
Now, I’m guessing you're from Brooklyn and would be quite familiar with the scenes filmed there. Do you have a list of all the Brooklyn locations where the filmmakers shot on location?

I've never lived in the USA. I've only seen the movie once when it first came out, because I know someone in it, anyway. But I recognized several streets and landmarks from the few times I've been there.
All I said was, the movie was supposed to be set in Brooklyn Heights, and some of the exterior scenes of NY were filmed there. The original poster (who doesn't seem to be familiar with Brooklyn) asked what part of Brooklyn it was, not where that specific apartment was, so I answered his/her question. Everyone knows it was mostly filmed in Canada, no one is saying otherwise!
Is the apartment the same one from the movie The Goodbye Girl (the original, not the remake)? They look so alike!
shareI'm from Brooklyn, and this doesn't look anything like the real Brooklyn, even if some exterior shots were filmed there. The ambience, the people, the accents, the school--just doesn't ring true.
shareI'd like to add that there's no way she could have afforded that big an apt. in Brooklyn Heights on a cake baker's salary--unless she had a trust fund.
