Through the movie i noticed a definite white/black theme: checkered tables, coffee and cigarettes themselves, cate blanchette's hair, and the actual filming. It seems obvious to me that this was no mistake, but i can't seem to grasp WHY. it seems like there must be a deeper meaning to it.
suggestions?

Well, coffee is black and cigs are white. Maybe it's as simple as that.
