'Of course Woody's first film with a black lead....

is amongst his top hated films by his fan base. Go figure."

A black friend of mine said this to me last week when a group of us were discussing Woody Allen films. Is this true? Discuss.

I've been a Woody fan since the '60s, so I guess I qualify as a member of his base, though I decline to speak for other than myself. I'm not sure Mr Ejiofor was the lead, as it was something of an ensemble cast, but his performance was not at all why I rate this as one of Woody's lesser efforts. The sometimes unbearably stilted dialogue, which contributed to almost none of the characters being likable, or really believable, was the leading culprit for me. Another was Will Ferrell. I may be the only such person on Earth, but I have never liked him in anything, ever. Don't know what it is about him, but, blech.

Black person in the movie has nothing to do with the quality of this film and, no, that black person is not in the lead, mind you.

Discuss what? That the poor negro friend of yours needs mental help to treat his paranoia and persecution complex?

Hazelle Goodman was the first black performer with a prominent role in a Woody Allen film, the near-universally beloved Deconstructing Harry. Let's move on.
