Melinda annoys me....

the Melinda character kind of annoys me. Anybody else? For instance, the scene she is talking to the piano-player guy, explaining how she shot the man she had been having an affair with, she is holding her cigarette oddly, and it's like she's eating candy or something. It's so unnatural. and she acts weird.

Is this something about the actress or the character? Nobody else in the movie annoys me in that way..

does anybody else know what I mean?

I think the negative Melinda is supposed to be annoying and irritating. That's why at the end Chloe S. says 'I've had it with her, someone else is going to have to take care of her.' I have known a few women like that, who managed to somewhat get by on their beauty in spite of their extremely annoying hangups, but eventually almost everyone agrees they can't handle a regular diet of being with her because it's too demanding. However, occasionally some guy will get hooked into trying to be the "answer" for her and inevitably ends up wrecked as a result.

Agreed. I saw Radha Mitchell in a couple of movies and I can assure you that it has nothing to do with her character. The answer is simple, there's nothing about her except she can't act,no matter how hard she tries. I find it hard to empathize with her characters and the only feeling I get while seeing her struggling is plain annoyance.

Radha Mitchell can't act? You can't be serious. Anyone can post whatever bs he wants in a forum.

reply

You are SO right. I actually just don't watch movies she is in.

reply

I definitely think it's the character and not the actress. I've seen Radha in other films and I can assure you that she is definitely not a bad actress. Besides, I personally think the Melinda in tragedy is pretty annoying and not the one in comedy.

Melinda is that friend that causes trouble everywhere she goes. People love her, but they're glad when she leaves, if that makes sense. Like a human hurricane, she tends to leave nothing but destruction in her wake. I don't think we're supposed to like Dramatic Melinda.

reply

The actress is brilliant. If someone thinks she's a bad actress, they know nothing about acting.

After having endured the likes of Mia Farrow and Christina Ricci perform in Stiffy`s movies, Mitchell`s pretty fine.

There was nothing wrong with Radha's acting abilities.

Yes she was very neurotic. Its kind of a Woody Allen trademark of characters.

yup. just watched this a second time and she annoyed me just as much as the first film. its not just how annoying the character is. it's the actress. i think if another actress had played this horrible character who i do not sympathize with (mostly the tragic melinda)although even comedic melinda is an annoying character as well, i think another actress just would have been more likable.

Julia Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Renee Zellwegger, Cameron Diaz, Claire Danes, Drew Barrymore. --- I can see them playing this role and making it SO much more likable.

i love woody allen films for the most part and i laugh because a lot of his lead males are versions of himself and his lead females are very scary like me. neurotic, insecure, always artistic/passionate but having panic attacks, flaky, fidgety etc. i am exactly like Christina Ricci's character in Anything Else. the similarities are crazy. it makes me realize how impossible I am.

but the thing that is starting to get to me about it is Woody Allen is either writing about the same 3 women he's known his whole life that made an impact on him, or he feels most women are this way. he also makes most of his female leads depressed, suicidal, weak, damaged and close to pathetic. Is this how he sees women? he always has the "i have it together characters" but they are the B characters not the A. the leads are always a mess. and Woody Allen himself is a mess so I kind of get it but I wish for once he would write a film where the female lead wasn't crazy in *every* way.........
