i connected that to the part in the book where she said she had a place between consciousness and sleep, as she called it, a rest stop. and when someone walked in, it startled her.

This is something that puzzled me too - I haven't read the book though, it likely explains why. She probably does it all the time.

I don't think she was because she was still recovering from rape. Rape takes time to heal from physically and psychologically. I think she was just in her chill zone.
