Exploding head
Maybe it was already dicussed. I don't feel like checking.
Could the handguns of that time really pop heads? I like the shot but it felt pretty unnecessary, just thrown in to up the gore.
What do you think?

No they didn't, he used what looked like a Colt Walker M1847 though don't qoute me on that and they use something similar to a .44, comparing that to a your standard 12-Gauge is stupid.
shareA .44 magnum could come close to blowing someone's head off, however the reaction to the gunshot is not consistant with a gun of that calliber. 44 and 45 magnum's kick are so powerful that if you don't hold the gun off to the side and with both hands it will blow back and hit you in the head. I've hard stories from frequent shooting range goers that people have died from this.
Watch Dirty Harry. His .44 knocks his hand all the way behind his head. Granted it's just a movie but it's a taste of what the kick is on a gun of that caliber. As far as whether or not they had either gun I doubt very much it'd be a .45 I'm not sure on the date they were created but it should be a little after the 1800's. I'm not sure but even if the .44 was around at the time I don't know how chaep or easy it was to get one because it was the most powerful handgun at the time. No they didn't have gun control back then but it may have been very expensive or military issue only. If it was military issue then that explains why 1 of them has the gun.

Walking Stick: the story of Helen Keller
Q:Why can't Helen Keller Drive
A:Because she's a woman
I haven't done any actual research, but I asked 2 reliable sources. They're both average gun collectors but it seems common knowledge that the Colt .45 was invented in 1911 and the .44 caliber was invented closer to the 20th century. I'd say that without either of these 2 guns that no it's not possible. Maybe a musket could blow a head into peices, but they didn't have any muskets.

The colt .45 AUTO pistol (think basic design for damn near all semi-auto clip fed pistols) was debuted in 1911. (that's why it's called a "1911".) However, the colt .45 revolver, which is a different cartridge from the auto .45 was around for quite sometime before 1911. Samual Colt patented the revolver in 1836. (http://huntingsociety.org/HistColt.html)
In 1873, the guns started using cartridges. Many of the weapons Colt produced were .45 cal. For what it's worth, the first cartridge loaded revolver to enjoy widespread popularity was known as the single action army, or "the gun that won the west.", manu. starting in 1873.
I don't know if that clears up everything, but it should help as far as the firearm question is concerned.
Also, since the earlier revolvers were powder and ball loads, an shooter could possibly add more powder then usual, "juicing" the load to increase the damage the ball did to the target.
Maybe you should read more carefully before you post a reply. Did I say I was grossed out? Not at all! I even said I liked the shot. It just felt tacked on.
shareHow can u mention a .44 Mag over the most powerfull handgun ever?
DESERT EAGLE .50AE
Caliber: .50 Caliber
Bullets: .50 Magnum Action Express bullets
Weight: Something like 10 pounds
Other: Classed as the most powerfull handgun / pistol in the world + with the biggest and most powerfull cartridge/bullets.
THERE EXISTS NO KEVLAR/BULLETPROOF VEST/GLASS/WALL IN THE WORLD THAT CAN STOP THIS GUN AND BULLET FROM PENETRATION.
Its often shown on movies but very unrealistic because the power of this gun is way more brutal and is alot bigger than you see on all these stupid movies example when Arnold Schwarzenegger runs around and shoots with one hand at one person 7 shots to kill him...
This weapon was banned from all militarys in the world, not because its to heavy or only 7 Clips, Israeli Military Force said once "Its inhuman to use a handgun like that, no matter where you shoot, not matter what you shoot, no matter if it is a big fat wall infront of the target... something WILL get killed".
The Desert Eagles looks, recoil, bullet, power, brutality makes Dirty Harry with his .44 Mag. and his cool one liners scream like an 8 year old.
WHATS MY POINT? ALL IM TRYING TO SAY IS YES..... YES, A PISTOL CAN DO THAT :)
You are stupid, the desert eagle chambered with 50AE is not "the most powerfull handgun ever". That trophy goes to the model 500 S&W magnum revolver. "Arnold Schwarzenegger runs around and shoots with one hand at one person 7 shots to kill him..." - you do realize that the desert eagle can be chambered with 357 magnum, 41, 44 magnum among others, all of which have less recoil and less effectiveness then the 50AE. "only 7 Clips" a clip is not associated with a handgun moron, a handgun uses a magazine. a clip is NOT a magazine. "only 7 Clips" - i think you mean only 7 ROUNDS.
Quit watching movies and learn fact. also dont continue to spray your ignorance about firearms.
I think the headshot is just about establishing that the film
takes place within the Horror genre.
Yes, they wanted it to be as rough as possible.
And it was really crappy-made, if I might add.
The 44 magnum was a product of the 20th century, it was created 50 years ago. The pistols used were a 44 caliber, but they were not "magnums". The magnum designation shows a 44 caliber round, with a lot more power behind it. During this time period, they would have been using 44 caliber lead balls....nothing fancy, no hollowpoints in use at that time. This round would not have had enough punch to take a head off as it was shown in the film. Nice shot, but not realistic.
shareThe weapon that causes the head explosion during the bank robbery looks like an "Army" Colt 6-shot Revolver from about 1860. This was a single-action, percussion revolver that fired .44 or .36 cal. ammunition.
During the Civil War the Federal government purchased 38 percent of the total "Army" and "Navy" revolvers produced by Colt. Soldiers who obtained one of these weapons for self-protection prized them highly. Most of these weapons in Southern hands were brought from home or were picked up on the battlefield.
Whether or not it was capable of blowing a head apart is questionable but at close range, I'd guess it's possible.
Come blog with me: http://blufftoninthedriftless.blogspot.com/
I do not know sou much about guns and weaponry in general, but I do know about movies. Movies are meant to be funny, to entertain, to make all those things that are impossible (techinally and moraly) in real life.
I say this because of the thousands of posts, on thousands of movies, reclaiming "realism". Please... let the movies be; let the people who like movies be.
If you want realism, go and rent "THE ADVENTURES OF ISAAC NEWTON"
PS: I say this to all of you that show pissed off by facts unbelievable in real life, not to the people that are just curious about facts in specific issues.
Regards.
More arguments over the exploding head please!
shareOk, well then..... here is my argument: the head explodes because... uh... cause... it's a movie, that want to shows that kind of scene... I don't know. Do you have one solid argument, fastal-2? O just felt touched with my comment?
shareNo solid argument here BUT I do believe that particular weapon, fired at close range, would probably make that guy's head explode.
I just love the entire thread - I mean, who really debates this kind of stuff? Real fans of "Dead Birds", that's who!
I remember the day we did that it was the last scene filmed and it was so cool.
We did tht scene after i got shot and killed in the eye
