how are they not phased by the creature toward the beginning?

One of the few things that bugs me about this film is the fact that they don't seem phased by a big hairless freeky beast that they shot down in the cornfield. They just get over it really quickly and never mention it again. What the hell?

Another is when the guy finds the shoeprints that morph into paw prints in the house. Why is he not more alarmed? Scared? He should have put the two together and realized that the thing they shot outside made the paw prints.

I believe these guys had been hardened by the war so nothing bothered them.Even when all the crazy S*** was happening in the house the one guy still wanted to stay because of the gold. Also terrible things were done to people back then like TAR and FEATHERS and the like. Also, I guess if they had seen the creature and ran for it then we wouldn't have had a movie.

I was totally thrown off by that too. Mostly because I actually really liked the monster effects in this movie, and found the bloody, skinless critter to be hella disturbing.

So when it burst out of the cornfield and the characters were all like "Eh, it's just a pig," all I could do was say "What? That's not a pig! That looks nothing like a pig. That is CLEARLY a bloody, skinless hellbeast. You guys are from the rural South; you should know what a pig looks like!"

So...I'm guessing the lack of reaction was just a ploy to get them to the house faster. Unfortunately, it had the end result of making the characters look as dumb as a sack of hammers.

Are you people 12 yr olds? Because up to this day when you make a trip to a remote countryside/rural area you will find residents are not afraid of some supernatural beings. I remember spending a week at some remote island where there was no electicity, tv, etc...residents fish, raise farm animals for food. These people always talk about encounters with unusual looking animals/creatures once in awhile. And guess what? They still live there.
btw, you also mixed the words fazed and phased. It's the other way around!

I am not american so I can't brag about my english language. Faze and phase were interplaced. I have no problem with that as long as I understand the point. It threw me off that's why I pointed it out. But cwhuroc, your reply has nothing to do with the topic.
All I'm saying is that those people from the 1800's must have heard and believed and actually seen freaks of nature. Disfigured/deformed people are not as rare in those days. In some regions of the world, they claimed to have seen things like chariots in the sky, angels, devils, etc.
Plus, if you watch the ending, that ALLEGEDLY dangerous and killer monster was not it was presented to be. Am I right or wrong? It's a person trying to escape.
The earlier scene was presented that way to make it look like it was trying to attack them which in fact, wasn't true. It was done that way for the audience/viewers. They cannot show the creature trying to escape or it will ruin the plot.
