Question???

Before they arrive at the house they encounter the old guy who tells them there is no farm house in the vicinity. He's standing next to two dead guys on the ground, a team of mules and another guy. What is this scene all about? It doesn't seem to fit in. I had to watch this movie three times before I understood what the heck is going on. It's a good movie, I thought, but difficult to understand after just one viewing.

one of the characters asks the man if he is killing deserters. people did that back then, they saw someone they thought was deserting the war they shot them for cowardness and stole their things.
it kinda ties in with the civil war period they set the movie in

at least that is my theory

JimsonWeed, that was an intelligent interpretation of the scene, which admittedly like the OP I did not understand....
Now, i totally agree with you and am sure what you said was actually what was depicted in that scene.
thanks for clearing the doubts mate...

I concur with Jimsom about the killing of deserters. I'll also add, that the old man was also the reverend in the flashback. The one that hung the father up to die on that cross. So, it makes sense that he'd tell them there aren't any creeks and that he's never heard of such a horrible place... He obviously was trying to keep the group from going there, but wasn't very successful.
