So was Todd a slave or was he a free man or a Confederate soldier himself? (and yes many blacks fought in the Confederate Army willingly despite what history boosk say).
William did not try to keep him there, so William did not 'own' him. Not that ANYONE could have kept Todd in that house, he was the only smart one. I am assuming he got away and was not turned into something....?
I got the impression Todd was a freeman. There did seem to be a bond between him and William, but he was definitely his own man. I agree he was the most intelligent of the bunch, but was it or was it not him on the cross and his head popped off??

cynkat, yes there did seem to be a bond. It was more of friendship than of anything in their past, imo. I liked how that turned out. They did come to that point of agression, the time in the dining room about the gold, but it seemed to be as each man as himself and his own rights. Todd mentioned how William did not own his life, but did not seem to say it as William himself or as Todd being a former slave.... but just as anyone in general. Even when Todd found the lady in the quarters, he seemed to just know about it, but not from first hand experience. Anyone knows what rawhide does, esp when wet. And Todd was extremely smart.
Todd is probably my favorite character because he seemed, by the looks on his face at times, to know something more was up, more than the others. The blacks coming over from Africa, and having their kids here, had more of a belief in the supernatural. That is what I "felt" from Todd. He had a caution the others almost did not have. I do not feel it was him on the cross, I thought it was Sam. Todd was the one who was "vaporized" right? Or not? And when he saw himself in the window reflection, wasn't that himself as the demon, similar to the window reflection of William (although William did not notice) in another part of the film?
sixpaws, good points all. I thought it was Todd on the cross because that's what William said, I think, but you are right, Todd got vaporized right before our eyes. And when the head came off you couldn't really tell who it was. Todd was my favorite also. He had the most common sense and seemed to be the real "cowboy" in the gang, do you know what I mean?

Yesssssss cynkat. Todd did seem the more 'cowboy' and I like how you put that. Common sense in his case was obviously important to the film. He and William played well off eachother.
Were you guys all watching a different movie than I was? Because after 'just' watching it, I could have sworn that William mentioned Clyde's name when they found him on the cross. You even see his face when they take off the mask. Todd was the dude who got vapourized by that demon guy. Overall this movie was pretty boring and predictable in character motivations and outcomes. I mean it's pretty obvious that the black guys going to die sometime in the movie. That was basically all I was looking forward to in this movie actually, not that I'm a racist or anything like that, because I'm not.
How about a shave? I can guarantee the closest shave you'll ever know.
I disagree. Todd vaporized, everyone else was clearly referenced or shown as suffering some sort of horrible fate. Todd had given up on the greed (gold) so I interpret that he got away and escaped the demon world, back into the real world. Joseph and Clyde already fell with their scheming and greed. Sam died of his wound and lusting after his brothers girl. William had a chance to leave but didn't want to leave without the gold, and Anna chose to go with him instead of Todd.
Also they joked in the special features about having an ending with Todd popping up out of nowhere holding two bags of gold. This further cements my opinion that he got out of there.
But really, you see zombie Joe walking around. Clyde is found on the cross/scarecrow. Sam is walking around possessed. William is shot (demon body) and Anna's dead body is referenced when the two soldiers are walking in the field at the end. Todd just vaporized, no horrible fate was ever shown.
Not that this movie really warrants a post this long, but that is my opinion. Todd lives!
