Gorehounds, Don't Be Misled By Opening Sequence!

When the movie started up, it opened with a bank robbery that was pretty damn gory. Innocent people and bank employees being butchered by these bandits.

[SLIGHT SPOILER: It even featured a character getting his head completely blown off; blood sprays intact. (END SPOILER)]

After seeing this, I was thinking that I was in store for quite a bloody ride. Boy, was I wrong! For the next hour and 20 minutes, I waited quietly for the killings to get graphic. They never did.

It's a bit disconcerting to see these good people inside the bank being shot to pieces by these outlaws, who happen to be our main characters. I was thinking that if the innocents are gory fair game, the deaths of the criminals would be very graphic. Not the case. Also, these robbers don't display any of the robbery bloodlust after the actual bank robbery. It's like their personalities change on the way to the plantation.

One thing I did enjoy was the early overcast forest footage. Being a Mississippian, I love the way the Southern atmosphere appears on the screen. Wish they would have done more daytime action.

I have a few more complaints, but I'll save all of that for my imdb review. But bottom line: really not worth the time.

after that opening sequence i thought i was going to hate Dead Birds. it isn't that I don't like gore, but those effects were totally over the top. i'm glad I stayed with it, because it is a pretty darn good horror film.

This is the best thing to wear for today, you understand.

i liked D.B. (granted its not a flawless film, you can always nit-pick, esp w/horror movies today)

i think most of your frustration was the filmmaker trying to set the story & characters up.

the house and the southern scenery def adds to the feel of the movie

sometimes the best horror/thrillers hardly use gore...they rely on suspense & the imagaination

as for the bank robbery, i was impressed. especially the innocent kid (among others) who gets shot. that shows you how desparate these robbers are. how many times do you see that in films?

they didnt intentionally kill the kid. when william and annabelle are in bed he says "i think i killed a kid in town" those aren't the words of someone who did it intentionally..

in terms of gore - no its not that great - though the black woman being cut open was a tad gross - I am surpirised how little gore is actually used in effective horror movies - use too much it becomes a joke (Evil Dead 2, Braindead...) use too little and its seems unrealistic
