Why is this called a horror/western movie...

when it takes place in the south (Alabama)? Since when is the south the same thing as the west? If they are the same, I guess we need only three directions on a compass instead of four.

I couldn't understand what you are asking. Are you really claiming that this movie can't be a "Western" just because Alabama isn't on the west of US? Are you aware that the whole world is not US?

reply

If the word "western" referred to the Western Hemisphere, then ALL movies that came out of the USA would be called "Westerns." So they weren't talking about the Western Hemisphere. Maybe someone who is also from the USA like me could voice their opinion - maybe they could understand better what I'm talking about.

The same reason why people think Django Unchained is a "western"...they're stupid.

Simmer down, folks... "Western" in cinema refers to a genre, not necessarily a geographical location. They were originally called "westerns" because of that location, but as time went on, anything inferring of "the cowboy life" got rolled into "westerns."

I'd completely call this a "horror/ western" movie. We're talking about genres; if it makes you feel better, call it a "horror movie with cowboys that takes place in the south." Whatever makes you sleep better.

Please explain me to the "Confederate soldier/cowboy" crossover. If all you've got is that "they both ride horses", you can pin a "I'm the dumbass fan that was referred to" button on your lapel.

A Western is the genre not the actual location.

So what would be the correct genre?
Horror/Western is the closest I can think of (even harder if you get one genre to use)
As soon as it is not in the 20th century, in America and there are horses, hats, a bank and guns it will be a western
Hell, A movie can have aliens and still be a western!

reply

Good point. There's no doubt about it being a horror movie but I find it debatable that
it could truely be a Western.

The Western genre doesn't just mean set in the Western US specifically. Many period pieces around Civil War can be classified as "Western".
