a fake show about a fake show..

it insults my common sense that they are trying to convince me that this joe schmo guy is not an actor himself and every single thing about this show is fabricated.. even the confessionals where the actors are talking about the roles they are playing seem very poorly done.

reply

Please don't. Even a basic bit of research will tell you that this guy is very real, and this show has been done before. They're not trying to fake us about that. People said the same thing when the original Joe Schomo came on. They were wrong, then, and you're wrong if you say about this now.

reply

im not so gullible, what would have happenend if the "real" guy figured out its a hoax on the 2nd day of filming.. "ahh thats a wrap folks no more show". what happens then.. the confessionals and scenes where they cut to the directors room and theyre going "ahhhh" & "ooooh" cuase he almost cracked the case, it all seems so fabricated..

actors playing actors playing actors.

While I don't think its faked, it does make me wonder that they showed a clip of LL saying "lady justice, may I come inside you" in a commercial, but in the actual scene he says "may I enter you". Why two versions especially since Lorenzo gets cut in the first vote? Unless he comes back to the show later.... two different lines makes me think they did several takes. If so that suggests scripted show not reality show (fake reality or not).
Unless that kind of think does take place on reality shows. "Lorenzo, say it differently in case the network thinks the first version is too raunchy."

reply

They also could have had him say that while chase was not around.

All they had to do is call him out in the middle of the night and record that line after chase went to bed.

OR, he purposely said "lady justice, may I come inside you", just because that's how is character is, they stopped and told him he had to say it "right".

I'm more leaning to the 2nd one.
It most likely was cut due to time for the Actual episode, but left it for the "coming up" as it went to commercial so at least that part was used.

Right, all good possibilities, JediMaster.

I'm leaning towards that last one as it is the simplest explanation. And as you mentioned time constraints, I'm sure they considered leaving the whole thing in and then simply cut out him saying it wrong and being called out for it. It's funny but not necessary and they eventually showed it anyway in the "coming up" teaser like you said. (or they just cut it out since too much attention paid to the original line might be a bit too much even for SPIKE).

the answer to your question lies in the second season, watch the dvd and you'll see (-:

Exactly. There's a principle called Occam's Razor, and I think it applies here. Sure, there's a far-out chance that Chase could be an actor, but think of what would be involved in that. They'd have to fake a Facebook profile for him (we know he has one), fake that he owns his own business and has a wife (both have been reported to be true), and convince the media to go along with the hoax. Not to mention that there'd be no good payoff to the show at the end for the viewers, other than "ha ha, we fooled you."

And as for the theory that he originally wasn't in on the gag and then brought in, both A.) see above and B.) what idiot would actually agree to continue to be the butt of that humiliation on television, and potentially find themselves them in a situation like Chase did in this newest episode where he got injured and had to go to the hospital?

No, the show itself may be faked, and everyone around Chase actors, but Chase is real.

Seriously? Watch season 2. They had a female schmo that figured it out almost right away and started saying things like "i didn't get my script under my door last night". They had to invite her to become one of the actors and also had to get a new schmo.

reply

Im guessing if the guy figured it out on the 2nd day they would have to scrap it and start over with someone else.

reply

Yeah that is what they did with Amanda. Im sure they have back up schmos from casting.

i dont deny this guy chase is a real person, with a real past, a real life/wife/job whatever. i just dont believe for a second he isnt aware. i think hes getting paid just like everyone else to follow a script. those mentioning the season 2 thing are falling for it too. the chick that figured it out, shes part of the allure of the show. its makes much more sense to write up a script and have people follow it then to have a wildcard that you cant predict whats going to happen. i think the premise of the show is great, but in todays tv world nothing is real. whats going on here is actors playing actors playing actors.. rick harrison wasnt an actor before pawn stars, but now he gets paid to read a script and act out a written show for us to watch. unless you still believe that random people off the street walk in and they make the shows like pawn stars up as they go.. lol stop being so gullible..

now youre taking the mickey with us

I had the same theory during Season 2, and got trashed by this board. Good luck with that.

I can understand your opinions but then why would they stop the schmo show, when it was obviously popular, after only the second season. I bet they tried to do a third season before but it failed. And if you re watch the first one they asked the first schmo if he wanted to stop and it was only because he said no that the continued the show. I mean how hard would be for them to start over? it's two weeks of filming even if the got caught every time the could do at least 26 different people before the years was out.

reply

I agree that it's super difficult to believe that Chase is able to go along with all the screw ups and stuff (like the asian girl not knowing details of her backstory, meaning that the premise of the house/set is that there isn't any small talk, which should seem weird to Chase?).

So the most entertaining parts of the show would be where the cast re-assures and convinces Chase that indeed he is in a believable reality show (e.g. the asian girl answering her backstory quickly, or at least being able to play it off). If they don't change the dynamic of the characters with the Schmo to make it more believable, then they should show those more entertaining bits. If they don't do that (which they won't because the show is already done filming?) it's always going to look very suspect...

and Ralph Garman did say they had a backup Schmo in a hotel nearby (on the Kevin and Bean Show) and he adds credibility imo.

reply

To a degree, the show is almost supposed to be disbelievable. And yet, you accept the "reality" in which you find yourself in. In the first season, Matt was put through some truly wild stuff and he said that he never even came close to figuring it out. His words were "I thought I was on the weirdest reality show in history of mankind."

reply

So we've season 2 and a half seasons of the show now. So if we are put into that situation we may very well know its the Joe Schmo show. But if you've never seen the show before and you are on a reality show to become a bounty hunter I'm not so sure you're first thought would be everyone around me is an actor. That would be a pretty big leap.

This show is certainly done with a huge risk. For instance, I'm not a huge TV and movie guy but I would have known Randy right away. Funny thing is, I wouldn't have had a clue who their celeb Larenzo was.

Another thing I'll say is that in situations where the deaf girl can suddenly hear...I think human nature puts us more likely to assume the girl is cheating/lying as opposed to suddenly believing the whole thing is staged.

reply

Right about human nature.

From Day 1 the "Joe" believes he's put into this reality show with other regular people. Every person he meets on the show his brain is programmed to know them as contestants just like him. For him to make the leap that EVERYONE else is an actor requires him to change the entire world immediately around him upside down.

He might have a suspicion about one or 2 people acting strange on occasion, but it wouldn't be enough to make him rethink everything is fake.

If you remember, on season 2, the girl that "figured it out", I think she only thought that 3 or 4 of the contestants were actors, not everyone, and not the whole show. And in season 1, in the last episode when they revealed to Matt that it was all fake, he still didn't want to believe that his buddy roommate was an actor, too, even after they told him that everyone else was an actor, the host was fake, and the show was fake.

reply

its been a few years since the other joe schmo shows have been on the air so he probably hasnt seen it, im sure they asked that mixed in with some other questions, since its the same host and an immediate giveaway. i think they probably also tell them this is a "crazy reality show" so he wouldnt right away think "what the f". i think an early giveaway mightve been randy, i dont know if he thought i know him from supertroupers or maybe i know him from somewhere. the deaf girl messing up twice is pushing the limits though (and i love her but come on, you have one job, don't hear anything! (-:)

reply

I agree with you "jasonstickets" about the deaf girl. It is more likely to assume that the "deaf" girl was cheating than making the leap to a "staged show".

I thought the production team could have handled it better by taking her off the show and explaining to the group that she lied to get on the show.

Moreoever, because she "mislead the producers and signed papers, it allowed the show to fire her." That would create space between the her accident and the show and would keep "joe" from seeing her and being reminded about the incident.

On a side note: how old r u that you know who randy is (idk) but not Mr. Renegade??
