great cast

I saw Colour me Kubrick yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very smart, well acted, witty, and of course full of references to Kubrick movies. The cast was a great collection of Brit actors old and young, some of whom I recognized and others I didn't. Lovely to see Leslie Howard again. Plus Marisa Berenson playing Frank Rich's wife was a nice nod to Barry Lyndon (and she got to say a few lines in this one too!). I don't normally take to John Malkovich but I thought he did a good job here. Does anyone know who the "sneery" young punker in the opening scene was (he tries to break down the door)? I have seen him recently in something but am not making the connection. Likewise the hotel manager, or is it just that he reminds me of the minister feeding Malcolm McDowell at the end of Clockwork Orange?
(Some great lines too, especially "think how popular Jesus would be if he played the guitar?")

There was also Robert Powell playing the journalist! it was great to see him again on films. And film director Ken Russell playing a mad man at the hospital, it was so funny!

One of the punks at the beginning was played by Burn Gorman, who played Mr. Guppy in Bleak House on Masterpiece Theater. Maybe that's who you mean and what you saw him in.

Leslie Howard? Didn't he die in a plane crash selling WWII bonds?

reply

Thanks - Burn Gorman/Mr Guppy is exactly the actor and role I was thinking of. And yes, you are right about Leslie Howard - I should have written Leslie Phillips.

I was delighted to see Peter Bowles playing Cyril, the stuffy (but very tongue-in-cheek) hotel owner. This terrific British actor played a guest role (Balor in "End of Eternity") in a great science fiction show "Space: 1999." This extra touch gave an already hilarious movie that much more enjoyment for me! Way to go, Peter!
