Should I see Eyes Wide Shut before watching this movie?

This movie sounded interesting, but I've been putting off Eyes Wide Shut, but now I'm curious if I should see that movie to appreciate this more.

Not at all. If you know some of Kubrick's films and the techniques and musical scores he typically uses, you're bound to notice some visual and musical references to them in Colour Me Kubrick (in particular A Clockwork Orange). But it's still a fun movie even if you've never seen any Kubrick films.

Having said that, everyone should see as many Kubrick films as often as possible. They are all smart, artful and entertaining movies. And each one he made has a distinct life and personality of its own. The man was just brilliant. Colour Me Kubrick is partly a loving tribute to his films.

P.S. Some of the people that worked on Colour Me Kubrick had worked on Kubrick films and know his techniques and style first hand. (Check out Brian Cook's IMDB page, for example.) The DVD has some interesting interviews.

Yeah, I love Stanley Kubrick, but I've only seen six of his movies all of them which are regarded as classics. I've been putting off Eyes Wide Shut though, but I would still like to see more Kubrick movies. Based off five of those six films (2001 just didn't do it for me), he is easily one of my favorite directors to have ever lived.

Yeah, I'm going to give 2001 a second chance like I will with The Seven Samurai. Hated The Seven Samurai, so it will be at least another few years before I give it another chance, but I can see myself watching 2001 again within the next six months. I just need to watch it by myself rather than in the company of my friend.

Well, if you don't have an answer, then why are you replying to this thread?

Oh, I forgot...lots of people on IMDb like to see themselves speak whether they have anything to contribute or not.

The reason I'm putting off Eyes Wide Shut is because I have heard such awful things about it. So that's why I am asking because if a lot of references are made to the content of Eyes Wide Shut, I'll see it. If not, I won't.

Yes, a lot of people do not like Eyes Wide Shut. Many people love it, however. It is my favourite Kubrick film. Practically every Kubrick film was criticised upon release but a few years later (usually about ten), they are appreciated as classics. This appears to be happening to EWS as well although it will probably take a little longer because preconceptions were stronger.

If you choose to watch EWS, make sure that you are ready. Be comfortable. Be in a good mood. Have no distractions. It is not an easily accessible film for most people. If you give it the time and effort it requires, I believe you will find it to be most rewarding. Feeling it and thinking about it are required. It needs to be an active experience full of questioning and pondering. I would not be too surprised if you do not like it much the first time you see it.

My understanding of what EWS is has changed drastically over the different times I have seen it (and it will probably change drastically in the future). I mildly enjoyed it the first time but as I watched it over and over, I realised that I had missed a lot of the details the first time through (which, collectively, are of utmost importance). I continue to frequently notice MANY details that I had never noticed before. It is because of this that it usually gets better with each viewing. Finding other viewpoints on what the film is also helps improve my opinion of it.

Colour Me Kubrick has very few references to Eyes Wide Shut, by the way.

I am not certain if I read that correctly. I read your last post as meaning that I did not appear abrasive. If that is the correct interpretation, thank you. :)

If I am wrong and it seemed like I was being harsh, I apologise. My abrupt sentences might have accidentally made me seem abrasive. I sincerely apologise if this is the case.

I'm pretty sure I understood it properly, though.

reply

You read it correctly in that you weren't abrasive. So again, thank you.

Aside from a few shots of la Kidman starkers, no one should waste his or her time seeing "Eyes Wide Shut"! I love Kubrick, but am sure that if he'd known it would be his last film, he would have made something else.

Disagree completely. EWS is one of the most wholly entertaining film Kubrick ever made.

People criticize EWS, The Shining, The second half of FMJ and largely ignore Barry Lyndon, but in my opinion that is some of Kubrick's most thoughtful and cinematically fulfilling work.

I don´t think I noticed any EWS references in CMK, so one wouldn´t miss out on anything.
