Artistic and menthol cigarettes

During the beginning of the movie when Paul Kemp went to the Newspaper office, after Lotterman was talking about the horoscope column, he asked Kemp "Say, you are not artistic are you?" Kemp said no. Then Lotterman followed with "You might want to re-think those menthol cigarettes" ... "They do nothing for you"

Somehow the phrase seem like there's a hidden meaning. Is there? And what is it? Or what is the connection?

Ahhh ... i didn't know menthol cigarettes are feminine :) thank you!

Mayne back in the day they were feminine, but I can tell you a lot of men I know smoke Newport Menthols. These are generally very un-feminine men.

My sister smokes them. I hate them. Real men smoke American Spirits. ;)
