I didn't understand the point of the ending.. he basically realizes the mistakes that he's made?

Also, when he went upstate to visit his best friend, what was the red folder he was holding? I thought it might have been something to do with a business deal he made..

It was probably a business plan that they'd talked about earlier on. alfie mentioned either taking over the company or launching a rival one as soon as he'd raised some money.
