For having the most unlikable characters in a bromance movie. One of them steals from his own mother on her birthday and pretends to care about the rich culture of drinking fine wine when he just wants to get drunk and the other is a sleaze bag who has sex with other women right before his wedding, I loved seeing him get his nose broken.
Not a bromance movie. It's a subversion of that. These guys won't be seeing much of each other after the events of the film. We're seeing Miles and Jack at the end of their friendship.
This isn't The Hangover, it's about male menopause.
Et ses mains ourdiraient les entrailles du prêtre Au défaut d'un cordon pour étrangler les rois
....true...but why was this movie so liked and popular?
I'd suggest in terms of how the film ended...these two points:
JACK: It was deeply satisfying to see Jack get his nose smashed in by the woman he cheated on his fiancé with. (She never KNEW Jack was engaged; so he cheated on HER, too.) He may be a "comedy character" but he actually pays for his selfish ways. He has to get married and photographed on that day, with a broken, bandaged nose. Its a hint that likely his future years won't get any better. He will cheat again and likely get found out again...
MILES: It was also deeply satisfying to see Miles get "one last chance" with Maya. Whatever there was NOT to like about him -- we certainly hoped he WOULD get Maya. So he ended up being sympathetic, after all. (Jack had suggested that the ex wasn't all THAT great -- "she made you feel small" -- and she seems a bit off-putting when we finally meet her, and her Ken Doll husband, hurting Miles feelings with news that she's pregnant.)
Great synopsis, ecarle! That sums up their respective characters perfectly. We're all flawed, indeed - and the way they are portrayed is realistic as if they are people we all "know".
I agree with the OP and I would add that this movie should be written up in the Guiness Book of World Records for WORST MARKETING.
I just watched it for the first time, and it is a very good film (not as great as everyone seemed to make it in 2004, but still very good) The advertising for this movie was all about "Wacky Hollywood types having a crazy weekend in wine country!" and the clips were awful. I actively avoided this film.
Ooooh, yeah, I don't think I would call this film "very good" but it has some memorable moments. At the end of the day, I would have to say Bottle Shock is a better movie and its based on a true story.
