I'm not entirely sure where you are either. Have you just killed the antlion guard? The vortigaunt should come out once the guard is dead and give you the pheropods, but sometimes the game seems to miss the trigger, and he doesn't come. If he didn't come out, you might have progressed improperly. There is a log blocking the path after that, and sand pits where you're supposed to practice using the pheropods. You might have to go back in the game and kill the antlion guard again, and hopefully the vort will come out.
Of course, I'm just assuming that is where you are stuck. It's the only place I can imagine from what you've explained.

If you have got the pheropods, then you won't have to restart it. Just throw the pheropods (number 6 in weapon menu) into the sand pit, and then at the dead combine guard (I'm sure it's in that order), and then walk towards the log and right click the pheropods to call antlions over to you. That should be it.

i solved my problem. i hit a glich in the game where after i got the peropods the vortigan disapeared in the sand and i had to stack a bunch of boxes to get over the wall where the guard was. after that i stacked boxes over the fence to get over. once i got over i was try ing to get past the log but nothing worked. so i loaded back to one of my saves where i got the peropods to see if i messed up. and then i realised that i hit a glich earlier because this time the vortigan didn't disapear. so the crap i had to deal with sucked. but i solved my problem now. thanks!
