Are there plans for a movie?

Does anyone know whether a Half-Life movie is in the pipeline? I've been wondering 1. who sould direct and 2. who sould play Gordon Freeman.

I think: 1. Michael Bay
2. What about Ralph Fiennes with glasses and a goatee? But could he pull off an action movie? Or Ethan Hawke? I originally thought of Jeff Goldblum but I think he may be a little too old.

What do you think?

reply

good choices, but Michael Bay, although a great director, would ruin Half-Life. I don't think a car chase really fits in with the story. Also, Jeff Goldblum would have been a great Gordon Freeman, but I agree he's a little too old for the part.

If Michael Bay ever got his hands on this game be sure to expect a ridiculously overblown action sequence involving dropping cars, giant bits of metal, or anything jokingly huge (lets say, a whole heap of Weighted Companion Cubes) off the back of an 18 wheeler into oncoming traffic while taking place on the Autobahn while motor bikes fly directly into burning skyscrapers which obviously never happened in any of the HL games (but hey, Valve might bite the bullet and cram that scene into Episode 3). All of this happening at the same time but is barely visible because Bay thinks it's a good idea to hire people with Parkinson's Disease to do the camerawork.

I gotta give him credit for incorporating some really nice foley art into his scenes. The metal and garbage clanging against the ground is like music to my ears. He's like Tom Waits without the singing.

Ok, I don't hate Michael Bay (I really like The Rock and Bad Boys for what they are, but then again, the 90's seemed to be the golden age of action movies), but everything he's made past the year 2000 has been pretty much garbage to me.

I have to agree that Micheal Bay is not the best director for Half-Life. Even though The Island is quite good, i think Bay will screw up a movie like this with brainless action and corny jokes. Perhaps Paul W.S. Anderson can pull it off? His Resident Evil was quite adequate and imo one of the better game-to-move adaptations thus far.

Casting:
I guess Charlie Sheen would be a good fit as Gordon Freeman; Malcolm McDowell might be a good Breen. Other actors i'm not sure of. I dislike the idea of Jeff Goldblum as Freeman.

Problems:
1) In the game Freeman never speaks. In a movie this would be quite impossible to maintain. A speaking Freeman can get corny very fast. Imagine Freeman firing Schwarzenegger-like one-liners? *shiver*
2) The Half-Life story has pretty much been told. A movie following the same plot might be entertaining to some, but not to the people who played the game who are the target audience. A different plot and it's not Half-Life anymore. Imo this is not really the same as a book-to-movie adaptation, because Half-Life is already a movie in itself.

dont think it would work as a film, but if it was one, i'd like edward norton as freeman & maybe ridley scott to direct.

reply

perter jackson wouldnt do it, he wouldnt be able to pull this one into a 4 and a half hour *beep* movie.

reply

if michael bay directed we'd have to put up with about 9 or 10 shots of the sun setting in the background while the characters do a hero pose

reply

James Cameron would be the perfect choice to Direct.
Charlie Sheen would be the Perfect Freeman

reply

what about Alfonso CuarĂłn (Children of Men)? i mean look at COM, it's a very similar setting and atmosphere, i think he could definitely pull it off. i'm talking about a movie made after half life 2 for the first one i would chose either ridley scott or james cameron

reply

i agree. when i watched children of men the first thing i thought of was city 17

reply

Agreed on Cameron.

plus it could have the best teaser trailer/tag line ever (that is, if it starts at the HL2 story instead of HL1)

reply

then all it needs is that weird ass radio noise the combine make as the halflife symbol appears.

reply

HALF LIFE MOVIE? Michael Bay? No offense but... *beep* off! And who the hell said it should be an action movie? Don't mess with HL!

reply

Maybe the last thing the world needs is another crap video game movie

reply

It SHOULNT be crap if they play their cards right...
Doubt they'll make a movie though, the games are a lot like real movies already.

reply

I agree. It seems like a lot of the video game to film adaptations are based on action based games like Doom and Resident Evil. These games have pretty flimsy storylines that are primarily there to try to explain the action. I've always felt Half-Life have had the most developed and standalone storylines of any game I've got my hands on. I think if there ever were to be a successful film made from a game, HL would be the best choice.

However, I have heard that Valve seem to be firmly against anyone making it into a film, so it is entirely possible that it will never come to pass.

reply

I think Gary Oldman could pulloff Gordon Freeman. In Batman Begins he kinda reminded me of Half Life.

reply

I actually felt that Resident Evil had the makings of a really good storyline if the movie had been made about the events in the mansion leading up to the start of the original game. Unfortunately, it was made by a jack@ss.

As for making a film of Half-Life, I think the only way to convert any of Half Life to the screen would be as a tv series following some of the general population - possibly in the 20 years between HL and HL2 with only references to Gordon Freeman. There would be the potential for some really good storylines with the 7-hour war and the effects of the suppression on peoples lives and the general harvesting of the population.

reply

Cauron is a good choice whoever mentioned that above, but Michael Bay!!!? WTF!!!

He CANT handle a storyline, he's an half-assed Spielberg wannabe

reply

Why the *beep* would you say its not an action movie, it being an action game. eveyrones got to bash michael bay, transformers was bomb as hell island was good too.

reply

It may be an action game but the action is IRRELEVANT when compared to the depth of the storyline. Hence, NO ACTION MOVIE.... No, no let me rephrase that... NO MOVIE!!!

PS Michael Bay does suck.... Transformers and The Whore... i mean, The Island are *beep* movies by all standards... Waste of time.

reply

when the *beep* did it become impossible for an action movie to have depth in its story? The whole story is about Gordon and friends FIGHTING the combine. this whole story is of rebellion and fightingeverythign that happens in hl2 is because of a war. All that sounds pretty action packed to me, but maybe thats just because im just not an *beep*

reply

I didn't say action movies can't have depth in the story. I'm just saying action is, by itself, pointless and forgive me for wanting to use brain cells when watching movies. That being said, it's easy to deduce how Michael Bay insults the audience's intelligence by making crapfests that are easily enjoyable by amphibians. Half Life is, in a way, about fighting but NOT movie fighting. Reason: YOU are Gordon Freeman in the game. Name a movie that makes me feel like I'm in it... Conclusion: Turning HL into a movie would be the equivalent of taking a *beep* on the piece of art that is Half Life.

So please, NO MOVIE!

That's a really good idea there... If a movie is made (still against it BTW), it would be best NOT to include Freeman in it (only visually of course). It could actually "work" if made like that. The director, however, should be someone in the ranks of Nolan, Spielberg, the Coen brothers, hell, even Tarantino knows how to tell a story and handle complexity, unlike Bay... As far as Cuaron is concerned, I've only seen Children of Men so I can't really judge his directorial abilities.

reply

haha thanks spax-CG. You are obviously a fan of Half-life. I just threw it out there...but to tell you the truth I'm not really sure who would be good to direct it. I love the idea of a Half-life movie but it would have to be done right. I shiver at the thought of it being screwed up.

reply

I think a Half-Life film from the perspective of Doctors Eli Vance, Arne Magnusson, and Isaac Kleiner during the Black Mesa Incident could be very interesting. That way, you don't have to hear Freeman speak, and it can retain an action style that would appeal to fans and a broader audience as well. If they were to go that route, I would say that Neill Blomkamp would be the best choice for producer. Ideally, I would love to see Ridley Scott direct, but I doubt he would.

- I may have been on the losing side, but I'm still not convinced it was the wrong one.

reply

Uwe Boll would be awesome to direct it ;)

Just jk. I'd say Michael Bay would destroy it.

Maybe Len Wiseman?

Actually just think, the other Day I was watching Resident Evil one (the movie), and it made me think of Half Life. I mean all it needs is headcrabs, and the name of the hive called Black Mesa, and you have Half Life. And think, the Resident Evil games mainly follow Claire Redfield, a character who doesn't even show up until the third films. And also there are other charactors in the games that have the HEV suits, cos remember at the start, there are 3 HEV suit pods, but only one left for gordon, which means two others in use. So there are in effect something like three Gordons running around Black Mesa. But the difference is, the others talk. and the game is meant to make us feel like Gordon, so the movie could easily follow one or both of the other HEV suit users, and you would have both a different storyline from the game, but you would still know it as Half Life, and an added bonus, there would be no worry of having a main char who doesn't talk.

And if they hire a good actress for Gina, perhaps even Milla Jovovich from Resident Evil. Then to movie will still be good.

Thanks for reading my rant.
