I just got this game...
... and I was wondering if I should finish the first one before playing this one. Are there some things I won't understand if I don't finish the first game?

shareIt would be wise to, but by no means mandatory. You will understand a lot more of what's going on (though if I'm honest, some non sequiturs between the two games might make you more confused!)
Then again, if you're a graphics whore you probably shouldn't bother because HL has dated quite a bit on that front. My advice would be to give it a go and see. If you don't get on with the original you may still enjoy HL2, so why not give it a go.
You won't understand some things, plus I recommend playing through HL1 just because it is an excellent game, but as someone above said, it isn't necessary per se. But I think all it will do is add to your appreciation of HL2.
So?

I haven't played Half Life 1, but this game is frikkin spectacular. The Orange Box has become a permanent part of my collection. Half Life 2 stands alone and is an experience all its own. I'm personally would rather wait for the release of Black Mesa, which is a remake of the original Half Life but with the graphics engine from Half Life 2. Looks amazing, I'm not a graphics whore, but I think I'd rather wait to play this for the background info.
Suck my unit!
