Who the heck knows...one of the many, many plot holes in this movie for sure...

I think they owned the catering business that was used at the party she was kidnapped from.

They said they were checking up on all the employees of Dexters catering. Since the catering was used at the club she was abducted from.

But the detectives had a much bigger role in the alternate thriller version of this movie.
