Your favorite scene? The scene you dislike the most?

My favourite are kind of small scenes, but they really warm my heart. It is the scene when one of the police officers holds the candle for the young monk, and when the other one put his coat on the monk lying on the floor. And also how they, despite looking very mundane and wordly as a complete opposite of the old monk, still diligently paint the carved letters on the floor.

Those scenes really calm me down and make me feel peaceful. Because I have watched way too many Korean thrillers and horror, I am in constant fear that the young monk, who is holding a knife, may become crazy and start a blood bath right at the scene. Luckily it didn't happen.

And regarding the scene I hate the most: definitely the ending with the kid brutally torturing the animals. The toture scene at the start of the movie I can kind of put up with, because it seems like the animals are later let go, as opposed to the ending, where the animals clearly die. I really, really hate how the director decides to abuse animals like that. There are many creative and equally impactful way to impress the viewers, why does he insist on doing that to animals?

I found myself indignant and then weeping at those scenes, in that order. This film ready hit me hard.

I found it heartbreaking, also, when the woman arrived with her baby, face covered in a scarf to hide her identify, then holding her baby, crying, then finally having to give him up. I never thought to wonder before why the first boy we watch grow up was raised by the first monk. Wow.

I agree with you on those choices.. That was a touching moment and I liked the way the master chose to teach the boy a lesson.. Rather than being angry, he made him empathise with what he had done to those animals and how it must have felt. I also disliked the way the master died.. I know he had to die to make way for the boy and the cycle of life but I wish it had been a less violent and sad death (ie that he hadn't ended his own life). I also disliked the scene where he used the cats tail to paint the message.. I know it's not the end of the world but the cat didn't seem to like it - I was uncomfortable with the idea that the animal 'actors' would have suffered
